  • Please first try removing the battery and SD card, then reinserting the battery ONLY. Does the camera power on when you do this? If so, please try connecting it to the computer to charge.

Please remove the SD card and battery and attach the camera to the USB cable. Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds. Any changes? Now insert the battery and press and hold the power button once again. Any changes?

Please ensure you are fully inserting the USB cable into the camera. It is a very tight fit, so many users do not insert it all the way. When properly connected, only about 1mm of the metal plug on the USB cable should be visible out of the camera body, and the cable should click into place.

Once fully plugged in, the red LED on the front of the camera should come on, indicating that the camera is connected and charging. A full charge typically takes around 4 hours. Simply press the power button on the front of the camera after it has a little bit of charge, and it should enter USB mode and be detected by your computer. Sometimes, if your camera does not have any charge on it, the camera will need to charge for a bit before it will be able to power on.

If the red LED does not come on, there is a chance that your USB cable is bad. If this is the case, please try a different USB to USB mini cable. This is a standardized cable, so you most likely have an extra from another electronics device. Please try swapping the cable. If you do not have an extra, let us know and we can send you a replacement.

If the LED appears, but only faintly or is flickering, there is a chance the battery is bad, in which case you need to buy a new one. Thanks.

  • I think I found a fix for the problem of a computer not recognizing or only intermittently recognizing a GoPro USB device. I believe it is the amount of power the camera is drawing.
I have a laptop with a USB2 port that does not connect via any hubs. When I connect the GoPro to it, it is recognized immediately and the connection stays up.
I have two desktop PCs, both have USB ports provided via internal hubs. When I connect them to the GoPro, either it doesn't recognize the USB device, or the connection is unstable and goes up and down.
What I found that works is to connect using a USB dual power product like this:

Also, I made sure to connect the two large USB interfaces on the PC to USB ports that were on different hubs, in my case I connected one interface to a USB2 interface and the other one to a USB3 interface.

  • I’m Annoyed
I just had this problem on my brand new Hero 3 Black. I used it for one afternoon, and when I plugged it in, my laptop would no longer recognize it, and the red battery light wouldn't illuminate.

I removed the LCD backpack and the small red LED on the back of the camera was dimly lit. It seemed like the camera was not only discharged, but somehow locked up. I removed the battery and the LED faded out. When I put the battery back in, the light came on brightly. When I plugged it back in, the laptop found it and the charge light came on.

Pulling the battery seemed to solve the problem.

  • Another possible fix is to turn off the WiFi on the GoPro. My Hero 3 Silver was not connecting and I was sure that the USB connection on the camera was loose/broken. After I turned off the WiFi, the computer immediately recognized the camera and I could open up the files on the SD card.

  • Forget all the random nonsense cures above and on forums all over the place. I cured it by downloading V2.0 into my new Hero 3+ Silver.

  • I'm having the same problem and, unfortunately, I can't update the camera software as my device isn't recognized via the USB interface. VERY annoying. My camera HERO 3 Black) is doing every one of the things as described by all users above.
I am able to at least get my data over onto my PC by using a SD card adaptor but cannot get any camera updates.

    Someone please help??
