At a first glance...
I like it. I like the layout of "Recently RECommended, Recently Uploaded"..however I think the conversations page would be seriously missed!

I agree with Pam-not having the conversations tab I think will be detrimental.

I will say that I do like, in the collaborations part on the front page, the "What are you good at" section. However, that may also be limiting (the one thing I can think that is missing is a tab for instrumentalists-I know we tend to call a lot for those in collaborations).

I agree with both Pam and librarygirl6. I'm not so sure about the conversations tab missing but I like the "what are you good at" section. I definitely like the "zipped" category when browsing for RECords though. I think that will help a lot especially for any remixers out there.

The browse page is great. I like being able to go through a bunch of records and it doesn't crash the page. Although I wish going through your records or recommends was more like that, so you could just hit "next page" instead of "load more." I also like the "what are you good at" bit. I think that'll really be great for getting people more involved, especially people who are new the site and don't necessarily know what to do or where to start.

The only thing I don't like is what everyone else has said... that the conversation page is missing. Recommends are great, but I think it's also important to see what people are talking about.

I agree with Pam about the Conversations page. It was one of the first things I looked for on the Beta site, and was confused when I couldn't find it - thinking that maybe I was just missing it? I know there's a URL for it, which is good... but there's no link on the home page, which I really think needs to be added (and it looks like there's no space for it on the layout right now).

YES - overall, it's great; I also liked the "what are you good at" and the addition of the zipped category. I also agree that the conversations page would be missed. Like lindzey42 says, it's good to see what people are talking about!

I also like the way the front page is organized. I think if I were just learning about hitRECord it would be quite helpful for getting a feel of things. My only concern there is that it's not clear right away that the individual squares are links (I'm used to relying on visual cues like bold or underlined text, and mousing over a link and seeing my cursor change). That would be fine, but for the rest of the site, it doesn't work that way. (Is this making sense? I don't know what to call things technically.)

Great work, thanks for everything you do!

I do think that the conversations page is important. I know that there are some who abuse the threaded conversations, but what will happen without the 'forum' will be that collaboration will just stop at one or two comments.

One of the things that makes the conversations page brilliant is that if, say, someone comments on my record with a suggestion, then someone else sees it and comments with another suggestion.

Without that page (conversations), the first suggestion will be seen by the record's creator, but no one else. Also, if I were to reply to someone's comment on my record, no one will know that I've commented (except me, as it'll show up on my dashboard).

For other reasons, based on the new set up of the site, records which will eventually fall off of the 'recently recommended' page, cannot be flagged up again for others to see. So something that I made a month ago, which people may have missed, will 'die a death' and won't be seen unless someone is actually searching for it.

I do love the new set up and I think the 'Recently Recommended' and 'recently released' pages are set up very nicely and user friendly. I do, however, miss having the 'Featured Records' lined up at the bottom of the page. Personally, I like being able to see at a glance what's been featured (what we're being asked to work on or remix), instead of having to navigate to the 'Featured' page. I fear that eventually, some of us will just bypass that page altogether, because now it's possible to ignore it or forget that it's there.

I am liking the changes so far, though...excellent work! I do hope that our suggestions/concerns are taken into consideration regarding the 'conversations' page. But I am honestly excited about these new features that you've implemented on the beta site.

A lot has been said already but I just wanted to point out again that I really love the new Recently recommended section too!

One thing that I've always been missing is that you can only see people's record as a list and it takes ages to go through them (like when you're looking for a specific record but have forgotten the name). Any chance you can offer the grid option for that too, like in an album for example? That would be great!

Other than that, great job you guys, as always!

I like it, but I have to agree with Pammy, librarygirl and others, We need our conversations page in the new site. However I really like the "WHat are you good at" part. I just want to say that I hope that this new site, works better with things like: Recommendations page (I don't know if this happened just to me, but sometimes I can see the same recommended records all day and it's not changing) and also my activity page is not updated and remains the same for a few days, it's not working properly sometimes).
Thanks guys for all your effort and for asking our opinion! :)

I agree with Lis on the topic of the 'Featured Records.' I actually think the new design is less informative to a new user in identifying records that have been selected to be featured. Perhaps if the primary featured record was a bit smaller, and the other featured records on the right hand side a bit bigger, then it would attract more attention to the fact that there is more than one featured record. Additionally, I enjoyed seeing the 'Featured Records' at the bottom of the page because it was easy for me to go to the website, quickly scroll to the bottom, and see the latest and greatest. That feature will be missed.

I like the new tab for the store on the homepage; I think it makes it much easier to find. After seeing the beta homepage, I actually went back to the current page to see if there was a store link because I hadn’t remembered there being one.

It would be great if there was a link to this message board listed under the ‘Support’ header at the bottom of the page. I was actually looking for this message board for a few weeks and couldn’t find a link on the site.

Also, I would love if when you selected ‘View All’ for Feature Records, All Records, Recommendations, etc. if the information appeared on one page with the option to go to page 2, 3, etc. rather than ‘Load More.’ If someone has a lot of records that I want to view and I keep having to hit ‘Load More,’ my computer can’t handle it and won’t load the records properly.

Great work guys!!!

I love the living breathing evolution our brave new HR world constantly undergoes. Thank you for all your hard work and effort and congratulations on everything added, especially the new features to the search engine.

These are the things I asked myself when I tried the beta version though:

1) When browsing, is there a way to paginate that I did not see? On the current version of our site, instead of having to click "load more", one can paginate by changing the page number on the actual URL itself. I didn't see a way of doing that on the beta version, which I think might make it harder to navigate?

2) Is the possibility of browsing past featured records going to be done away with completely? cause I really like having that option as a resource of inspiration...

3) Is there a way to have a few standard tags that are suggested when one is first uploading or revising RECords? Cause I've seen that a lot of users don't make use of this feature in the first place, so a few standard suggestions might make each individual record easier to find when browsing.

4) And finally, how do unrecommended, un-hit-upon, un-recently-hearted RECords get found during browsing? If somehow some jewel gets missed when it is first uploaded, is it lost to the depths of the site forever and ever?

So yeah, just a few things that crossed my mind... :) thanks again!

Agree with everyone. Conversations page is needed.... but the recently recommended is good and the "what are you good at" is helpful as well

Yep I concur with everyone - for me the conversations page is the heart of the community - to remove that would make the site much more anonymous and fragmented. Yes, it would curb/hide the potential chaos of an open community forum but I think the cons of ditching it far outweigh the pros. The conversations page is how I keep up with everything and what makes the site feel personal and supportive rather than anonymous and competitive. If anything I'd like to see more old communication features back like direct messaging etc. I know that's not gonna happen - but I'd really hate to see the interactive/community element further squeezed.

I like all the other changes tons - and think you've all done a great job on those - but I have to say losing/hiding the conversations page might be a dealbreaker for me...I think it would cause a lot of folk to just sorta drift off...

Still - I know you guys will have thought about it all at length and not done something like that flippantly - so I'll trust your judgement if needs be and go with it - but I hope I don't have to! The site feels so naked without it! Like those dreams where you have no shoes! :P

Thanks to everyone for replying with all your feedback and ideas. I hear the conversation page message loud and clear. And about the mini cards being used on album pages, and more broadly in grid views.

Also of note, this beta is the first of many. We'll be rolling out many more features and improvements based on your feedback in the coming weeks.

I see everyone already got to the conversation page. XD I'm also wondering about the "random record" button? maybe I am just missing it?

I would also like to see the Random button make a comeback somewhere on the Browse page. Perhaps as a category, if random Records can be generated in list form?

I like that idea Soupy, a random list would be nice. It might dig up some of those older records as well. :-)

I am agree with everyone, It would be really nice to see the Random Record button back on the site, in fact I did a collaboration for the Random Record the last year, the people started to make remixes of old records thanks to the collaboration and the Random Button, I think that this is useful! Thanks guys, keep doing the great job!!!

That Random Button was a 'hard won' feature. There was a lot of talk for a while about how cool it would be to have a Random button and ntheon even created a Random Record Game with instructions on how to do this manually.

The Random Record collab is a wonderful result of having a Random button. I think it's great to challenge yourself by REmixing records this way. You end up creating something different than you would if you start with a preconceived concept. I think I made a couple contributions to that collab. ..and should do more!

Just for fun, here's the link to ntheon's Random Record Game:

I remember those discussions moonbug! Actually that was where having previews of records in the browse section, and tickboxes for skills was suggested too so at least we've got those! But yep ditto on the random button. Any method that helps us to see RECords that might have slipped through the net has to be good. Personally it'd be cool if there was a box that displayed a random record every time you refreshed the main page on HR - to force people to see things :P Also it'd be great if we could filter out portrait pics and anything with the title 'delete' from the random selection.

It's true, the reason for wanting a random button was to increase exposure to records that might have been missed. And I agree, it would be much better if portraits and records titled 'delete' were eliminated from the mix. So many portrait icons are left blank anyway.... haha.... why do people do that! ;cP

I've finally been using the beta site more, so now I can give feedback!

I love how the recently featured records are laid out, because on the current site right now there are massive text records featured that you have to scroll past to see what else has been featured. Being able to click on the list of records in the frame and pull up what you want to investigate definitely eliminates that problem.

However, I believe Lis mentioned it, the featured records bar at the bottom of the page is one of my favorite things, because you can browse it and see what's been featured in the past easily. The Recently Featured list just sort of... ends after a certain number of records and there is no way to see what else has been featured over time. You know, for posterity or just getting an idea of what has been worked on in the past if you're new.

I'm also wondering why the JOIN button on the front page is green and not, well, red...

And, finally, browsing is much more pleasing on the beta site with the pagination and Recently Recommended option so, good work guys. :)

Oh, whoops, sorry for the long reply last time. But, I can't see anywhere on the beta featured records page how many hearts featured records have and can't heart them without having to click on it.

@lidan: hearts will be added soon, trying green join button to see how well it works.

@Mark Schlesser, Metaphorest, Gabriela: Will discuss random.

@everyone: hear you about conversations, we're going to try making up for it with other features, can certainly add it in. communication needs improvement site-wide and we're working on that.

Thanks Brett :) Conversations is my only main gripe really - if we keep that I'm happy. Not just cos of communication directly with the RECord creator but cos of the way it lets us bump up a great RECord that would otherwise slip through the cracks. Notifications of new comments on subscribed conversations would be great too. Cheers for always responding so quickly!

Thanks for the response, Brett, that is good to hear. I'll also second Metaphorest's remark that the Conversations thread is a great way for RECords that have been missed to gain some exposure. I know I've had my own RECords suddenly get a rash of new hearts because someone has left a comment. It's a nice feeling. And I like that if I leave a comment that if has the potential to have the same effect.

I really like the fact that you can load new records when browsing "Latest Records". That's fantastic. It means there's not such a short window for new work to be spotted in.

I'm not entirely sure I like the fact that Latest and Recently recommended are no longer on the front page, though. You have to click through twice to get to Latest; I'm worried that will give it less traffic, and people would get distracted looking at existing work on the front page, and forget to check out all the new stuff that is constantly flowing through?

Yes the "What are you good at" thing should stay no matter what you end up doing with the site. Looks like everything was thought out well. Just don't make it any more complicated than that and I think what we got here is a good website on our hands.

I'm gonna echo what lidan and Lis said- I miss having the featured records at the bottom of the page. It's definitely nice to just be able to glance at that to see what's been featured, rather than having to go to the featured page. I also agree with everyone about the conversations page, glad you're addressing that :)

Other than that, I really really like the new site! The recently recommended page is fantastic, and the look of it overall is much cleaner and more appealing.

Being here for less than a month I have a lot of problems to find things. And when I found something and don't bookmark it in my browser, I rarely find it back next day.

But what drives me crazy is, when I am browsing through the different collabs and recommendations and I want to take a closer look at one of them I always find myself on page 1 again, when I hit the back button to go on with the other stuff.

How about a way to bookmark things directly on the site. I am thinking for something like the "shopping cart" on online shopping sites, only that it wouldn't be a "shopping cart", but an "inspirations cart".

i agree with you that it is hard to find things. i can't answer any questions RE: site functionality but one way you can kind of bookmark things on the site is to make an album. so you could do an "inspiration album", if you like. that would give you a place to put things you want to go back to later. the nice thing about albums is that you can add and delete things as you go. then you could put that album into your "featured RECords" folder so you can always get to it.

A site that's being used by this much people needs to be optimized and simplified as much as ti can, I also think the communication should be boosted, not limited, and messaging should be added. People should be able do discuss things on chat, or at least send messages to each other, it's 2012 people.
