New Home / New Features

  • Announcement
  • Updated 4 years ago
HitRecord will transition to a new web home on Thursday morning starting at 9am Pacific Time. We expect this will take between 2 and 4 hours.

As always, your feedback and help in this process is incredibly valuable, especially since this is a one-time major transition.

Where are we going?

HitRecord.org will now be hosted by Heroku. We'll use Amazon's CloudFront video streaming combined with the FlowPlayer for all newly uploaded videos. Older videos will soon be transitioned.

Why are we doing this?

HitRecord has always had one foot in the cloud. Now we're making this transition to be more flexible, more scalable and more reliable. It will take less work to respond to peak demand, and it will be easier for us to deploy new features. In short, our new home will make HitRecord better faster, and just plain faster!

Thank you. As always, we love working with you, and are trying to build tools that help us make great art.

Oh wow, how did I not even know this site existed? O_O Anyway, that's cool! Will there finally be a way to view one's own records and recommendations on separate pages instead of hitting "load more?" Because when you click away from it and then go back, you have to start at the beginning again. That's tough when you've got a few hundred recommendations. ^_^

Oh, this is JulesKD.

Hi Jules,

Alex here. Currently with this release there will be very few new features. You will see most of the same features just on Heroku, our new hosting site. But stay tuned, we will make it easier to view your own records and recommendations in the future. For now, I would suggest opening a new tab and navigating between tabs. Most browsers you can open a new tab, by clicking the link with the scroll wheel of your mouse or holding down command or control + left click.

Hope that helps!

Hey Alex! Okay, that's great, can't wait to see that in the next update! :D I do usually use a few tabs, but sometimes when doing re-rec albums, and/or resourcing sometimes 20+ different records, it gets tough to keep all those tabs open. The "load more" button should either back-click to exactly where it was before clicking away, or paginate. (I am honest to god surprised that "paginate" is a word. I thought I made it up.) BUT! That's probably for next time around. Can't wait to see what you guys are coming up with. Great work!

Jules! There is a way to paginate! When you click on the 'load more' button, it is replaced by a number like '9-16' - this is a link to view only page 2. The address to this page ends in something like p2 which you can change to p3 to view the third page etc. :)

I had no idea this was here! This great and very exciting news! Just one question though: I have heard in other moves on the HitREcord site that some RECords have not made there way onto the new version..I recently got a new laptop, so quite a lot of my earlier stuff is no longer on my hard drive..is it worth backing everything up just in case? Thanks!

eek, Pammy.. that's a good point. i've lost a lot of stuff that didn't transfer over from v3.. 'tho i didn't understand this coming revision to be of that magnitude, so i wasn't worried about that happening this time. but.... i guess it'd be smart to bakup everything, anyway :/ thanks for the reminder :] <3

Will this move make uploading animations from www.ratemyanimations.com possible? I'd like to add them as a reference. I tried, but couldn't - dunno if you can upload with Gigya on here which is the plugin (or whatev) they use for their animation software.

Also - for the transition - I hope sincerely that deleted records will not make the move. I think there are over 2500 videos that are marked for deletion and, while the idea of not deleting records is nice, sometimes you just gotta delete em. Most of the time people are deleting first attempts or something screwed up so they should just be deleted. I tried to upload an animation and, like I said, it didn't take and so that empty record is there. I tried to add it to the deletion page thingy, but couldn't quite figure it out. And, respectfully, as a member of the site I would like to be able to delete my record if I know it's jacked up. Especially if no one has used it as a resource already. That could be one caveat for deleting records - you can only delete it within the first three hours IF no one has used it as a resource. Will the cloud make that kind of stuff possible? And will privacy be the same in a cloud?

An inhouse mailbox would be nice - say if you like someone's stuff and you want to ask them directly if they'll read a part for you or draw something particular - being able to ask them directly would be nice. This wouldn't take away from the collaborative effort and may even contribute to more of it. It seems to me like the main contributions/collaborations center around HitRecord events and stuff and that's not exactly what I envisioned when my friend told me I should sign up for this site. I like it a lot and I think collaborations could also be sought after as well as spontaneous. Will the cloud have room for that kind of thing? Amazon Studios (d be willing to be a mod and help out with that.

Great job with the site. Looking forward to the changes.

Hi ppodd,

There will be very few new features on this release. Although, you will notice a new uploader, video player, and video encoder.

As for uploading your animations as references, we are planning on doing away with adding reference records in the future. I would also would like to remind you that hitRECord is not a place to display your portfolio but a place to upload your creative work to collaborate on bigger and better projects. With that said I encourage you to upload your some of your animations so we can work together and create something great! We are working on improving record creation, to lessen the errors of records being created while uploading or encoding.

User deleting records feature will not be included in this release or any future releases, we have special copyright regulations that does not allow us to do this. Although, we are thinking about the idea of allowing users hide their own records, so stay tuned!

HitRECord mail, you say? We are not going to be implementing any in-house mail system any time soon. But, we are thinking about allowing users to connect to other social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

Happy RECording!

Thanks for getting back to me on that, Alex. The reason I asked about the references thing is because sometimes a person might use something in their record that they did somewhere else - somewhere that they might not be able to upload here and the reference can at least speak to the person's right to use the footage in their creation. But that's fine - I understand why you want to do away with it as people can't use them or love them or anything. So that makes sense.

True. And to that extent, I think hR must be very diverse, but you wouldn't get that idea just visiting the site. How can we encourage more site exploration and collab so that other people and their work and their contributions have an opportunity to shine? I'm disappointed seeing the same people and subjects mashed over and over and over and over again. It breeds complacency and is an easy "go to" to generate page traffic - not to mention it could be discouraging to some.

Also, I noticed that there's something on the site that talks about monetizing some of the collabs, but it doesn't say much else about it. Is there a way we can know how much our company has monetized to date? Like maybe have a stock exchange ticker at the top or something. That would be cool and it would let people know that some of our productions are generating dough. It would even be awesome to see which records have made money and/or how much. This could motivate people to be more focused, more creative, more daring, more strategic, or even more commercial in what they create if they see that some of these records are actually making money. That's just a thought. Maybe I'm the only one who's interested in that. I dunno. I'd like to see what kinds or records have been successful.

Yes. Please allow facebooking and twittering. Talk about generating site interest and an effective use of marketing. I actually wanted to upload a vid on FB this morning, one that I have on hR, and came to hR first to see if there as a share button, but there was not. Took me 30 mins to upload to FB directly.

Anyway - thanks Alex. I see the site is makin that move now. Can't wait to see the new unveiling. See you in the flip side.

You can always put a URL in your description or in the comments on a record. That would serve the referencing purpose while still maintaining the focus on the work being submitted for use on hitRECord.

Great, guys! I like the connecting idea. One other thing I'm wondering is, will there possibly ever be a way to embed videos from HitRECord? That'd be a nice way to share them, on Tumblr and such.

I must be daft, for I can't find it. Or maybe its due to the new maintenance? If its still there, could you tell me where on the record can I find it? (the H2O molecule with a carrot point is the heart, yes yes?) :)

Aha! I see! But that's for the older uploaded vids on the previous system (viddler?). Once they are transferred onto the new system, that 'carrot-thingy' is gone. It's not on the new players...or is it??? :O
