HP Pavilion tx 1000 laptop screen going black

I have a HP Pavilion tx 1000 laptop. Yesterday I was using it normally and all of a sudden the screen went black. When I turned it back on, a small warning icon (yellow triangle with an exclamation point in it) appeared at the bottom left of the screen in the toolbar. It has done this once before. Is the computer just overheating? I am worried because this computer is replacing another HP laptop I had before this where one day, the screen suddenly went black and the computer wouldn't turn on again at all.

  • I’m frustrated
HP Pavilion tx1000 has been giving me overheating issues. I have had the laptop repaired by the Geek Squad at Best Buy twice within my 2 year warranty and now my warranty recently expired and the laptop wont boot most of the time and the wireless adapter is not even being recognized. The Nvidia chip inside the laptop has a defect and is frying the computer. Please recall this product. So many customers are having this issue and the laptop cost me 1000 dollars with a 200 dollar 2 year warranty. Please listen to our petition and help us out.

  • Thanks DoubleClickItToFixIt, I'd like to get someone to fix it here in Adelaide Australia. Seems a shame to send it to the US to do that. Does anyone know of people repairing these TX1000s in Australia?

  • "Screen is black but all the lights are on and won't boot?" I'm having the same problem as what's being described: won't boot, lights are all on but nothing happens and a black screen.

    Here's my simple fix:
    (HP TX1000)

1 - hold the power button to the right for about 5 seconds. The bios setting will shut everything off.
2 - push power button and then tap the "delete" key (upper right) continuously until the boot splash screen comes up and it will continue to boot to your login or desktop. You may have to repeat this entire process on occassion but I've never had to do it more than twice to get it to boot up without issue.
*note that when the splash screen first comes up you can hit F10 to go into the bios and check the boot order etc

This is a pain in the ass whether you hit shutdown or restart you have to do it but it works and otherwise the notebook works fine (but run hot as hell). Me thinks it has to do with a fugged up hibernate/sleep mode function and probably some sort of bios tempurature alarm auto shutdown. The bios is weak and has little to no adjustments.

    Nice work HP

The issues your having with the systems is linked to the Nvidia chipsets.

If you care to find out more, check this website out.

    http://www.tx1000reflow.com

    ====
Excuse me, there is no such 'REFLOW' for the PCB with comp on both sides

Wrap your Tx1000 series in supermarket plastic bag, turn your machine on with AC/DC adapter, let it bakes itself for 1-2 0r 3 hours and remember turn it
upside down so the CPU and Nvidia can sit on top of the PCB at this area on the other side is Delete key/Keyboard

That's what I thought and my machine is still running with this method

  • Sir !,

HP can not figure it out how to REFLOW the PCB and too many of HP customersfor not only Tx1000 but also dvxxxxx got the same problems

The trash bag fixed mine many times why cost 200$ from yours and 400$ from HP with 'No-Guarantee'

This is not China problems but HP's Eng Product Design Dept. (Taiwan) problem. China is a Mfg to do what to build n what were told .

    My thought.

  • Amazingly I saved my tx1000 last night by following this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctHTF3....

But before you start I highly recommend you read this http://computerlimbo.com/Thread-hp-tx... and the hp repair manual that shows the correct method of disassembly and reassembly. http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/... . Most importantly it shows which screws go where when you are putting it back together.

A couple of things that worked for me. I used a 90 watt halogen flood for 3-4 minutes over the cutout in my cardboard and aluminum foil heatshield and then used a towel to press down on the GPU and held it for 1 minute. I used a hammer to flatten a pre-1982 penny. I discarded the "thermal boot" that had separated the gpu from the heatsink. I put a thin layer of thermal grease on top of GPU, the CPU and on the bottom of the heatsink pad that fits over the GPU and then put the flattened penny on top of the GPU and screwed down the heatsink over the CPU and GPU. I made sure the heatsink was touching the CPU and the penny was squeezed between the heatsink and GPU. I also cleaned out the radiator vents in the fan while I had everything disassembled.

I hope this works for you as it did for me. To tell the truth I doubted it would work for me. My laptop had blue lights and one orange mute light on , but other than that was completely comatose. , but much to my amazement after I got everything back together the laptop booted right up as soon I turned it on.

    • Update: While computer boots up a new problem has developed. The screen now has blotches of pixels that sometimes won't refresh correctly. Its not always the same pixels, but when there is more than one window open or a window has animation parts of the screen go black or show parts of a previous window. It's as if the screen memory doesn't completely get refreshed. Still better than not booting at all, but I am afraid this procedure was not a long term fix for me, but I am thankful for a 2nd chance to get my files backed up though.

  • If you purchased certain models of notebook computers containing an NVIDIA graphics processing unit or media and communications processor, you could be entitled to benefits under a class action settlement.
This is a summary of the Full Notice. Click here www.NVIDIASettlement.com to visit the settlement website to obtain the Full Notice. Do not reply to this email. Replies will not be read.
The United States District Court for the Northern District of California, San Jose Division, authorized this Notice.
This is not a solicitation from a lawyer.
A settlement of a class action lawsuit (The NVIDIA GPU Litigation, Case No. 08-cv-04312-JW) relates to the NVIDIA chips inside certain Dell, Hewlett-Packard (“HP”), and Apple notebook computers. The lawsuit claims that NVIDIA sold defective Graphics Processing Units (“GPU”) and Media and Communications Processors (“MCP”) that affected the performance of some of the notebook computers in which they were incorporated. NVIDIA denies all allegations of wrongdoing and has asserted many defenses. The settlement is not an admission of wrongdoing.
Who is Affected by this Class Action?
All United States residents who purchased in the United States a version of one of the Dell, HP or Apple notebook computer models listed in the Table of Class Computers containing an NVIDIA MCP or GPU. These individuals are referred to as “Class Members” in this Notice.
What Can You Get From the Proposed Settlement?
Class Members who file an approved claim will be entitled to:
    1. Replacement of the NVIDIA graphics processing unit or media and communications processor, which are referred to in this Notice as the “chips” if you purchased a version of certain models of notebook computers manufactured by Dell, Inc. or Apple Inc. containing one of the NVIDIA chips; or
    2. A Replacement notebook computer similar in kind and value if you purchased a version of certain models of notebook computers manufactured by HP containing one of the NVIDIA chips; or
    3. Reimbursement of amounts paid for repairs related to problems with the NVIDIA chips. NVIDIA will fund $2 million from which reimbursements will be made. The amount paid may depend on the number of reimbursement claims received.
NVIDIA is providing these benefits to members of the class, and is funding the settlement. Dell, HP and Apple are not parties to this lawsuit.
How Do You Receive a Benefit?
You must first qualify for filing a claim, and then file an approved claim with supporting documentation during the Claim Period. To qualify for a replacement as described in numbers 1 and 2 above, your notebook computer must be one of the Dell, HP or Apple notebook computer models listed in the Table of Class Computers, contain an NVIDIA MCP or GPU, and be exhibiting one of the symptoms listed in the Table of Identified Symptoms. To qualify for a reimbursement as described in number 3 above, your notebook computer must be listed in the Table of Class Computers, contain an NVIDIA MCP or GPU, and must have been repaired because it was exhibiting one of the symptoms listed in the Table of Identified Symptoms. The Claim Period will begin after the Court grants final approval of the Settlement. Whether or not the Court has granted final approval, the Claim Period dates and further instructions for how to qualify and file a claim will be posted at the settlement website (www.NVIDIASettlement.com) and at the toll-free telephone support line (1-877-440-7557).

    • I'm really interested to hear that as I'm from Australia too. Unfortunately I don't have my computer now as I foolishly went with James Howell of 954 Sagamore Drive Tunnel Hill, GA 30755 phone 706 307-9689 doubleclickittofixit.com fame and got shafted like others in this post.....as detailed in this blog he took my computer and started off with a $125 quote which quickly got extorted up to $494 plus postage before I gave up... I tried to use the arbitration as per the contract I signed but he flatly refused. Basically I feel raped, first by HP and then by predators like James Howell954 Sagamore Drive Tunnel Hill, GA 30755 ph 706 307-9689
of james@doublecklickittofixit.com and you can read about it more at better business bureau BBB CASE#: 21619 and on local Georgian police records for theft. I see though from his website that his shop is not in business anymore as an 'act of God' has seen to it that he is not operating anymore. Almost makes me a non atheist!
    • If you're looking for Howell I know where he's hiding. His home address is 100 Springdale Dr Apt 50 30701-1973 Calhoun, GA

He stole from my company as well. He was kicked off Ebay permanently. He signed up under a different name, but they figured it out and kicked him off again. He's a real creep. Sorry to hear he burnt you.

  • My tx1000 laptop is one of the models being recalled, but the model identification number, KC469UA, is not. My laptop has had many of the same problems that others with this model complain about; after I had the computer for 8 months, I had to have the motherboard and some other components replaced because the wireless card was malfunctioning. It was fixed 2 years ago, under warranty. Now the wireless is periodically not working. It's a matter of time before this $1200 laptop is rendered useless and I have no recourse.

  • I am the "lucky owner" of tx1250eg.
Bought it from Germany Sep.2007 for 1150 euro, or nearly $1500
11 months later black screen issue.
HP Greece, replaced the entire motherboard free of charge as item was on warranty.
Since then, I had always my laptop, on cooling pad.
24 months after replacment, second motherboard off.
Service say I must replace motherboard for 292 euro, or nearly $400
HP Greece, does not recognize the problem, and refuse to participate on fixing
AND I WONDER, WHAT KIND OF SERIOUS COMPANY SCREW CLIENTS LIKE THAT?
OK, THE STUPID ENGINEERS DID NOT PREDICT THIS.
THE STUPID MARKETING DIVISION, DOES NOT REALIZE THAT MILLION OF DOLLARS THEY SPEND IN ADVERTISMENT GOES DOOWN THE DRAIN AS LONG MORE AND MORE UNHAPPY CLIENTS SPREAD THE WORLD HOW HP TREAT THEIR CLIENTS?
THE STUPID "CUSTOMER CARE", DO NOT UNDERSTAND THAT THEY ARE LOOSING CUSTOMERS DAILY, BECAUSE OF A FAULTY CHIP, WHICH COST ZERO MONEY TO REPLACE?
THE STUPID CEO OF HP, DOES NOT SEE THE FUZZ AROUND?
For a good reputation, you need to work hard for ages, and only an hour is enough to destroy all the hard work done.
Unless HP recall for free replacment of the faulty chip, the future of this company is not a long one.
Unhappy customers never return to a company which does not respect the money we spend, not even respect our brain. They refuse to take any responsibility, while its enough to search on ebay, to see how many faulty laptops are there.Check all these fora, about the same issue.
    WAKE UP GUYS, sooner or later, you would replace these Nvidia faulty chips for free, its the low, its common sense;
WHY DONT YOU DO IT A BIT EARLIER, IN ORDER TO SAVE SOME OF YOUR REPUTATION, IF ANY LEFT?

STOP IGNORING CUTOMERS, THEY ARE FEEDING THE SHAREHOLDERS OF YOUR COMPANY.

  • Florida Motherboard specialists used to be good at what they did but now the seem to have faulty test equipment and bad management. They lost one of our computers and said they would pay have as soon as i emailed the paypal receipt to them. I had to follow up with them the following business day because the didn't send the money and talked to Edwin and he said he was doing so at that time and 4 hours later still no money. they used to do good work but now about 50% of the laptops don't work when we get them back. I've now moved on to a different company.

  • Trouble is the GPU, and yes.. the solder is the source of the problem when black screen of death spoils your day.
I fixed with CPU Cooling paste and a coin. Done that trick before with a Zepto which was same story with a compact powerhouse but no way to get rid of heat fast enough.
A quick fix is to press down hard on the keyboard while booting. If the solder is warm the machine might boot.
Real solution... Get a desktop for demanding work, and a laptop with specs that wont result in the china syndrome.
HP is really to blame. Ofcoarse they have people who saw this problem.
My final note on this, apart from throwing the tx1000 in the nearest river, is to run Ubuntu or whatever linux flavor you prefer. A doomed OS like Vista is so bloated that It spends more time running in circles and getting hotter than 5000 volt hairdryer, than what an OS is supposed to do... stay in the background and make sure you can get some work done !!!!

Long live the tux, and fuck HP !!!!!

  • My computer ix a Tx2000 tablet and it has the same blank screen problem even though the indicator lights on the laptop are on,after going thru this blog i used the towel treatment yesterday and it worked although after an ugly sound from the computer, dont know how long this solution will last but at lease i was able interact with the system after such a long time and it was such a relief.

However i am so pissed off at Hp cos when i bought the lappie it was so expensive, will have to think twice b4 using their product again..Tee

  • I’m confused/frustrated
I am having a simplar issue with my HP notebook, the laptop begins to start up and than it just gots to a bright black screen and just stays there? Now I have just turned it of and left the charger plugged into it hoping it may just need a charge. My guess is a a virus only because this a similar problem has happened to me before. They told me that it was my hard drive/software and I payed about 60 dollars to get it fixed in the end.. After the fix it worked great, Staples (the company I bought it from) had to recover it, which was fine because I had recovery discs and they also renstalled windows 7, and I reinstalled Norton at home. To anyone with an HP laptop or any laptop, be sure you have protection from things like viruses ect. I do still like HP, but I do get the immpresion that they're cheaply built, and I don't think I would really recommend them for that reason. Anyway I will keep you guys updated if any changes with my situation occur. Lesson learned..

  • It looks like the date to register claims was March 2011. Unfortunately I just became aware of this. Anyone aware of any recourse options available to those who missed the deadline?
