"People who liked this also liked" section doesn't update when ratings change or when accounts are being deleted

Hello!

I did a research on IMDb in the last couple of months and I discovered a serious issue with the "people who liked this also liked" section on all movies.

Everything started with my own movie Be My Cat: A Film for Anne. It got 40 ratings of 1 in one night after I shared the page on facebook (from a hater in my friend list who created 40 accounts, since the movie was not released). I wanted to repair this and I created 40 IMDb accounts to rate my movie with 10 until I reach the general rating before the troll attack. But I also rated some other films with 10, using those accounts. And after that I realised that all those movies started appearing on my movie's "people who liked this also liked" section. But they have absolutely nothing in common with my movie, so I deleted the ratings. Nothing happened in the  section "people who liked this also liked". Then I permanently deleted those accounts. Still nothing happened in that section, those movies are still there, being recommended as movies liked by people who liked my movie, after two months since I deleted the ratings and the accounts.

So I decided to make an experiment, just to be sure of this issue before contacting IMDb about it. I've created 6 IMDb accounts and with each account I rated with 10 this random movie called Pali Andjeo that had no ratings and no films listed at "people who liked this also liked". With the same accounts I rated with 10 some other random movies. After two days, that section appeared on Pali Andjeo's page, with all the other movies I rated as recommendations. Everything ok so far. But then I logged into each of those 6 accounts and lowered below 5 or deleted the ratings to some of those movies. I waited more than a week, but nothing changed besides their general rating. Those movies were still there in the "people who liked this also liked" section from Pali Andjeo. Then I went further, deleting permanently those 6 accounts. The ratings from Pali Andjeo disappeared, but the section "people who liked this also liked" is still there with all those movies, after more than one month from deletion.

Why isn't that section updating when the users change their minds about ratings, or when they delete some of their ratings, or when they delete their accounts? I know it was wrong to make multiple accounts, but by doing this I discovered this issue. Please, is there something that can be done?

Thank you very much,

Thank you very much for taking this issue into consideration!

I  initially wrote directly to the IMDb help desk, waited for a couple of days and then wrote here. But after a while I got a response from the help desk saying that:

"For security reasons we do not disclose the mechanism used to generate recommendations, or how often and under which circumstances these recommendations are re-calculated."

I asked back if they can at least confirm that the recommendations will be recalculated at some point in the future, but I didn't get anything back.

Because I'm sure that nobody wants to see recommendations based on ratings from accounts deleted months or even years ago. Or recommendations based on old ratings that in the meantime changed.

Of course, "People who liked this also liked" is past tense. But I'm sure nobody assumes that once a movie liked, the recommendation stays forever on IMDb,  no matter if the person changes her mind over time or deletes the account. Which is what's happening now, since months have passed since I deleted those ratings and accounts and the recommendations are still there. It's a form of misleading people who think they are watching current recommendations based on current ratings from active accounts.

A recommendation system similar to the ratings system, which updates daily, would be great!

All the best,
Adrian

Hello,

The issue still hasn't been solved, after almost one year. What's happening?

Thank you!

Hello, Mr. Col Needham,

You said two years ago that a ticked had been opened with the appropriate team to solve the problem I described above. It is still not solved. My movie Be My Cat: A Film for Anne and the random movie I used in my experiment still have those movies listed in the "people who liked this also liked" section, although I deleted those accounts two years ago. And, of course, most of those movies also have each other in that section. Please address the issue again.

I am directly interested in my movie's page first of all, I want to see an accurate list of movies that people who like my movie also like. But at the same time, this is an issue affecting the entire IMDb. The recommendations that everyone use as genuine are actually deeply flawed, based on deleted accounts from years ago and ratings that maybe had been changed long ago. When people, including me, check the "people who liked this also liked" section of any movie, they expect genuine and updated recommendations.

Thank you very much,

Still no solution, after 3 years from reporting this?
