Granted, both priests die, but they drive the demon out of Regan’s body. Unless you’re counting the sequels as proof of their failure.

I believe you are right on both counts. Father Karras's sacrifice of himself for Regan's sake is a triumph of love. But the Devil tempted John Boorman to make the travesty that was EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC (1977), and Evil won out again. See http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076009/trivia .
