Hello,

On my profile page (and any other page for that matter) I get this little yellow banner "telling" me to change my username. To be frank, it's puzzling me a little. What is it exactly? (check in the picture, right on the top)

Thanks

Hello EIM,

What happens when you click on "Edit your user ID"? What does it prompt you to do?

Okay, I get this:

Then I click on "Save Changes" and I get this

Then when I get back to my "activity" or "review" page, I get the same banner again.

Tried this again and again, same thing... seriously, I hope some day I won't find my contributions or my account vanished or deleted because of some malfunction...

EIM,

Apparently, you just save the same username. Maybe you could try to just change one letter, but I understand you would not like it.

Just wait for an IMDb staff to come around.

I would definitely not like it, unless I can change it once and then get back to the old one.

And I did it, even by changing the username, the problem is still the same.

Hi ElM. I posted an announcement about the update here: https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/imdb-id-update

I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble updating your name. I'll have customer support contact you so we can figure out what the problem is and how to resolve it.

Hi ElM. Here is the content from the announcement:

IMDb ID update

We are making an update this week that may impact you.

We are updating all mentions of 'IMDb ID' and 'nickname' on IMDb and changing them to 'User ID' for consistency.

How this change may affect you:
The label associated with your public reviews, lists, and ratings will now be your User ID and it will be consistent with how you are represented on Your Activity page (https://www.imdb.com/profile). If you don't have any public reviews, public lists, or public ratings, then the change won't affect you.

You can update your User ID by visiting the Change your User ID page in the Account Settings section here: https://www.imdb.com/registration/changenick
You can also update the text shown in the description field of Your Activity page (https://www.imdb.com/activity/changedescription). You may decide to do this if you want to share information with others on IMDb, e.g., social media links.

Why are we making this update? So that your User ID -- your publicly displayed name -- is consistent everywhere your account is publicly represented on IMDb. You will still have a private contact name (real name) that will appear (only in your view) in the navigation bar in the upper right of every IMDb page and will be used for helpdesk and emails you receive from IMDb.

You don't need to change your ID. They are just giving you the opportunity.

If you say so... but unless I'm wrong, I seem to be the only one in that case. Do you get the message as well? Why would anyone want to change his username anyway?

I mean, an opportunity is always nice but "EDIT YOUR USER ID" sounds pretty much like a recommendation, and the yellow banner and "danger" sign don't really help.

Besides, I did change my username as a test... but they're still giving me the opportunity.  Still the yellow banner whatever I do.

For what it is worth: I have received this morning (CEST) the mail notification that Karen shared above. I notice the same banner as you showed when I display one of my lists.
I take it as an information message, first degree: it just tells us that our ID now appears next to our contributions, and if we wish so, we can change it.

Thanks for sharing this :)
Maybe I'm reading too much into it and it's no big deal, but since my username always appeared next to my contributions, I didn't get why they had to inform me about something I already knew.

And as far as I am concerned, I hardly use the lists!

The banner was intended as an 'FYI' but given the confusion it has caused we've removed it.

When we updated to 'User ID' we also made the 'byline' that appears by opinion content (e.g., reviews) appear the same as the ID that appears on Your Activity page.

In the past, some IMDb users had one User ID on their Activity page and had chosen to display a different one by their reviews. The intent of the alert box was to make everyone aware that they could manually update (edit) that ID if they wanted to, based on what they would like to have appearing next to opinion content.

'Confusion' is the right word, i'm glad it wasn't something on the 'problem' side.
Anyway, thanks for all the involvement, yeah my page doesn't "wear the yellow ribbon" anymore :)
