Do you mean 'great' by the talent or by their international fame and impact on history?
Depending on your answer, there should be a few changes, I think the male list should have Juan Fangio, Jesse Owens, Joe Louis and/or Sugar Ray Robinson. Actually, boxing deserves more inclusions 'like you had tennis for women). You should even have Bruce Lee who developed his own techniques (and Federer shouldn't top the list, he belongs to the Top 5 but as number one, i'd see either Ali or Pelé)

I know you told me many times, that wasn't my point. I only said Ali should be number one, and his picture looks fine anyway.
I didn't even think of the homepage, but that's because I don't get many polls on the homepage so it's not gonna influence my appreciation, when I make a poll, I think I'll be lucky if I get it picked, I'm not yet in that "how-will-that-look-on-the-homepage" phase.

When I asked why Ali isn't the first instead of Federer, you say that Fed is one of the greatest players of all time, so it's not about the looks, it's for the pertinence of his presence and I respect that.
Now, you say it's about the looks, well, you have dozens of good pics in your list, yet Tiger Woods, Pelé, Phelps and Federer are in the Top 5, is it a coincidence? No, of course. I don't think it's because the pics look good but because they're among the greatest players of all-time, so it makes sense to have them starting the list.
I know how the homepage system works and I have never seen a homepage poll where the first five pictures were only there because they looked good, they were always the most popular choices, so you can't say the priority is looks when you know pretty well that a homepage poll always have the most popular and pertinent choices in the top.
And they're not at the top because they look good but because they are so popular you're more likely to find quality pics for them. That's why they happen to look good. It has to catch the eye, but not just from an aesthetical standpoint, the voter must instantly identify the option, there's no homepage poll starting with good-looking unknown options, and you never suggested such a poll anyway, so you can't prove me wrong.

I don't mean to interfere with your way of suggesting polls, you do a great job and the number of homepage polls you got speak for that, I was only pinpointing the relevance of Ali as one of the leading inclusions (though I think he deserves the number one spot) even if you take the looks into consideration (and in an image-poll case, you can have terrific pictures of Ali, Lewis and other athletes). The priority is the looks for the homepage but that's because homepage deal with popular or known options that have plenty of pics available on IMDb. Now, let's just end the debate here.
