2001 is Awesome

Hey, so I have a friend who is obsessed with film, and even goes to film school, but he hates 2001: A Space Odyssey. I understand why kind of, because if you don't have patience scenes seem to drag on, but I still completely disagree and I even consider it my favorite movie of all time. Can I have some backup for why that movie is awesome?
