I can't start a new topic on any message board I've tried. The 'Start New Topic' hot spot links to this page:
http://www.imdb.com/read_only/board_post_reply

That page displays a 404 Error. I tried the message boards for 2 different movies.

This may be a transient problem. I've encountered 404 (page not found) errors occasionally when using the IMDb message boards. I just tried to Start a New Topic and did not have any problems.

You may wish to clear your web browser history and try again in a few minutes. If you continue to experience this problem, someone here can suggest other possible remedies.

Thanks, but no joy.

I deleted the IMDb history. The "Start New Topic" malfunction persists.

This needs to be reported to the developers. I don't think that http://www.imdb.com/read_only/board_post_reply is the proper URL for submitting a new topic.

The URL to Start a New Topic should be of the form:
http://www.imdb.com/board/bd0000001/post/bd0000001

This link is specifically for the "I Need To Know" message board.

I also get a 404 (page not found) error when I click on this link:
http://www.imdb.com/read_only/board_post_reply

I'm assuming you are logged in. What board were you on and what did you click when you got that link?

Well, the code that puts that link into the fetched page is obviously, 1, hard coded, and 2, hard coded to the wrong thing. I would think it should be a PHP-generated link that's specific to the film.

The films are:
"Exodus" (1960) at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053804/board and
"Bulworth" (1998) at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118798/board and
"Lonesome Dove" (1989) at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096639/board and
any other film you care to visit.

The link is on each of those pages and is titled "Start New Topic".

The links you provided go to the old style of the IMDb message boards. Clicking on the "Start New Topic" produces the link http://www.imdb.com/read_only/board_post_reply

I suspect that is intentional to discourage people from using the old style of the IMDb message boards.

It looks like if you add "/" to the links above, the pages work correctly.

Exodus" (1960) at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053804/board/ => "Start New Topic"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053804/board/post/tt0053804

"Bulworth" (1998) at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118798/board/ ==> "Start New Topic"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118798/board/post/tt0118798

"Lonesome Dove" (1989) at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096639/board ==> "Start New Topic"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096639/board/post/tt0096639

You're right.
This:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053804/board
results in a bogus "Start New Topic" link.

But this:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053804/board/
- note manually added '/' at the end - results in a proper "Start New Topic" link.

Sounds like a bug to me.

Thanks for your help.

Yes, I didn't know I had two threads on this. I figured it out earlier Sunday.  As said above, you must add /board/ to the URL to make a new thread post.  It has to do with a new format for the message boards.  Earlier I posted this on the other thread:

Wow, so pleased with myself (I know so little about computers).

Yesterday here was the situation:
(1) I could make REPLIES to threads on the Message Board. Good, OK.
(2) But I could not "Start New Topic." If I clicked that link, I would get this error message (from my screen shot):  http://www.antiquegamblingchips.com/aa/404ErrorIMDb.jpg

Anyway, I think the problem has to do with IMDb changing things (like an Obamacare improvement).

Here is the cure:

¶ I used to reach the Banshee Message Board through this bookmark of mine:
There, when I click "Start New Topic," I get the 404 Error message.

¶ But if I add "/threads/" to the URL, there is no problem.  To wit:
There, when I click "Start New Topic" everything is OK.  So that will be my new bookmark, though I like the other format better.

Oh, now this is really getting crazy.

This link:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053804/board
takes me to a page with a broken 'Start New Topic' link.

This link:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053804/board
takes me to a new-style page with a working 'Start New Topic' link.

Do you see any difference between those links?

How is this possible?

I see no difference, going by what I see on this message board.  Yet when you click the two links, only one (the good one) ends up with a final slash after "board" (/).

Regarding the bad one, if you type the final slash (/) in the browser window and reload, it works.

Sorry for the inconvenience -- this was due to a technical problem at our end. Everything should be back to normal now. Please try again and you should be able to post normally.

Let us know if you still have difficulties.

Sorry, Giancarlo,

No joy.

Nothing has changed.

Problem statement:
I go here:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053804/combined
I scroll down the page to the Message Boards section and click the See more » link. I'm taken here:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053804/board
On that page, the Start New Topic link provokes a 404 Error message.

This is repeatable and is global (all movies).

Ciao - Mark.

Mark, I got to see the message board the correct way so you can make a new post!
This is what to do:

I found message board to look like this:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053804/board
and if I click "start new topic", I get 404 Error message

BUT If I go to browser window and add a slash (/) to the URL, and reload, it will look like this:
www.imdb.com/title/tt0053804/board/
and  the message board page is OK, and you can click "start new topic."

(As I said in my post above, you could also add: "/threads/" and it will work out.)

I got a message from IMDb, and they said they fixed it, but I don't think so. .....
Right.  I  just  got this from an IMDb employee: "Sorry, apologies for the incorrect update. You're right, this is not fixed yet (I jumped the gun!) but we are working on it."  See below.  Anyway, my fix lets you make a new post.
