I can't use the politics board for serious debate because every time I start a thread, someone (or perhaps multiple parties) reports the thread as spam until it is wiped by the autobot. The people who are doing this are so dedicated that it has happened to quite literally every single thread I have started on the politics board for nearly 4 years, and on numerous different accounts. As soon as I am identified it starts happening. Threads which simply do not violate the terms and conditions vanish just as easy as ones which do, and I just dont understand why Imdb refuses to act against abusers of the report function when they are doing it so blatantly. Am I to be expected to believe that literally every single thread I have ever started on the site has been wiped because it violated the terms? Why are these bullies permitted to dominate the site? It's massively frustrating.

Why are you letting them do it? It's blatantly false reporting which is being done maliciously, so why is that acceptable? I've had two threads wiped since I even began this message.

Three. And the last one was entitled: "Imdb still permitting false abuse reports" or something similar.

And another, entitled "Imdb deletes thread for complaining about false abuse reports". Thanks guys. It's really refreshing that you care so little about users serially abusing the report function.

I dont know why IMDB bothers to have a politics board at all, its a site about movies. If I were to vote on how to fix the problem it would be to remove boards that have nothing to do with TV and movies

Vincent, if I recall correctly, IMDb staff established the Politics message board because political discussions were dominating other message board. I believe they hoped that this would reduce the noise to signal ratio (i.e. political comments to on topic discussions) on most other boards.

Maybe you're right.

I became a regular poster because the layout was simple and it was one of the few boards on the internet where you could have a debate in real time. Trolls have always been a problem, but I just do what the site recommends and ignore them. Unfortunately, that simply has never worked, since they just report all my threads instead and have them wiped. And when I say all my threads, that's exactly what I mean. Every single one of them. For four years.

It's reached the stage now where other posters are reluctant to post anything in my threads because they know anything they post will be wiped within an hour.

It's literal harrassment, and while I'm not going to let it get to me, what I don't understand is why the site refuses to do anything about the people who are just using the board to falsely report posts. It's happening to others as well as myself, but I've always seemed to get the worst of it -- at least on the politics board, which is the only board I really use.

I don't bother starting topical discussions anymore, or trying to debate with anyone, because it's just impossible. The threads I start now are stupid, because that matches the mentality of the people who are harrassing me.

Thanks for your comments anyway. I probably just need to move on and stop wasting my time posting here.

Peace.

I can give some account names that are definitely doing it: buffalobobsdefunct and cowabunga44. It's the same user, but they are two sock accounts he just uses exclusively to report me with. The main account he uses is Poldy_Bloom. Some of the other, saner posters have been monitoring the activity on the accounts for me, which is how we know he's doing it. He'll turn up in one of my threads with his Poldy_Bloom account, make a sarcastic remark, and within 5 minutes he'll have logged in and out of the buffalobobsdefunct and cowabunga44 accounts, presumably because he's just used them to report me.

Hi Glen,

http://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/statistics/prevalence/antisocial-personality-disorder.shtml
According to the US National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), 1.0% percent of the US population of Antisocial personality disorder, which is defined by the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual on Mental Disorders, fourth edition (DSM-IV) as “...a pervasive pattern of disregard for, and violation of, the rights of others that begins in childhood or early adolescence and continues into adulthood.”

This sounds like the classic behavior of an internet troll. Even if only a small portion of people with Antisocial personality disorder have IMDb accounts, the number of such people could easily be in the hundreds if not thousands.

Despite IMDb's efforts to discourage people from creating multiple accounts, there are some relatively straightforward means for a motivated troll to create those accounts. Likewise, there are some very easy ways for such people to be logged into IMDb at the same time with multiple accounts.

In addition, IMDb has had problems with robo accounts, which people set up to attempt to distort the results of film ratings, MovieMeter and StarMeter scores, user created lists and polls.

The IMDb technical staff has put in place methods to discourage misuse of IMDb. However, such methods cannot be so restrictive that it discourages people from using IMDb.

It's funny you should mention distorting film ratings. I watched a video of a tea party rally a couple of days ago and the main speaker was encouraging doing exactly that. He didn't mention IMDb, but he did mention Rotten Tomatoes. Effectively, he was telling people to rate liberal films as low as possible and Conservative films as high as possible. He called himself an "activist" but to me that's just trolling. He hadn't even seen most of the films he was rating.

I just wanted to give my sincerest thanks to whoever took action against the user in question. In fairness I'm as crazy as the rest of the posters in there and probably deserve periodic wipings myself, but there's just no way on Earth I'm malicious enough to follow someone for years, falsely reporting every topic they start.

Thank you. I owe you. The guy was driving me nuts.

Peace.
