Abuse of the Report Function/Bullying

As I said he would, the serial reporter has found this thread and commented here, feigning approval. But on the Religion board, he's preparing retaliation:

An IMDb user cannot 'wipe' an account. Only a site administrator can do this. So if he is 'pretending' not to have 'wiped' an account, well he is not pretending at all. He is telling the truth. The troll 'f_l_e_e_t_s_i_n' seems to have removed his own account from the site, which is his right to do. No doubt he was less than pleased his horrid 'poetry' was rightfully removed by moderators.

I am not defending the troll Discerning-Tasteful. I think he can be as disruptive a presence as you do. But your latest accusations here are speculative at best.

You have a rather skewed view of what does and does not breach site rules and regulations

The results of the abuse report system are not always "seen." There is a progressive system of handling abusers. You don't see, for example, when a user's authentication is removed and they have to borrow Mom's credit card to continue. He then has fewer remaining ways to authenticate.

You report button may not work any more if you've repeatedly reported the same user. His status gets worse and worse as he's reported by different people and less affected by one person repeatedly reporting.

If it's you giving him the most attention, it's you getting him to do it more and more. What you should do is report once, then put him on ignore. Let it go and move on. He's trying to upset people. Giving him attention and posting to him and about him gets him to do it more because what he's doing is working.

Let the system work the way it's designed and report and ignore. Otherwise, you affect your own status in a negative way. Also, progressive disciplinary actions will take over and he'll start getting deletions, then see his post quota go WAY up giving him fewer chances to post, then authentication removed, giving him fewer ways to re-register...then he'll get bored and move on or be unable to re-authenticate.

It's tempting to dismiss this fellow as a basement troll with his mom's credit card, but this one is not like that; he's got an unlimited amount of resources to revalidate, and has been doing so for many years. He will never be unable to re-authenticate.

his username was originally Adam_Lewis. Once a poster discovered the Get Satisfaction post and drew attention to it on the Religion board, Lewis immediately altered his Get Satisfaction name to 'Christian_and_proud' - the same one you see replying to this thread, pretending to be a Get Satisfaction administrator. But the name Adam_Lewis marked him as one of IMDb's most longstanding board terrorists:

...one with hundreds of identities over several years. Note the overlap between variant "Lewis" posters and "He_Cant" variants. This person floods the boards he takes over with his own identities, and terrorizes board communities through impersonation and abuse of the Report function. Under normal circumstances, a typical poster can only use the Report function against a given target so many times before the system stops responding. This person has nearly unlimited resources to report using unrelated sock accounts, with separate IP addresses and multiple validation methods. This has enabled him to impersonate an administrator and hold boards hostage, deleting anyone he doesn't like at will, destroying and dividing board communities. Many abandon their boards; still others make sycophants of themselves, trying to ally themselves with him to earn his favor and avoid his wrath. Several regular Religion board posters have made themselves his instruments, helping him play his game of "Who deserves to be deleted on this board" threads, and helping report those who are nominated. These are unilaterally conservative Christians, who happen to share Lewis's antagonism towards progressives and gays. The Religion board is not his only target on IMDb; he's doing what he does on several of them, including 'Prometheus.'

Among the replies and remarks on this thread, the main troll under discussion, Discerningly_Tasteful himself, is claiming that I am "willing to tolerate obscene and offensive 'poetry' posted ad infinitum, but a user who annoys you with his offhand and irreverent nonsense you wish 'wiped'". Unlike him, I am not here complaining about poster content; I am perfectly happy to use the ignore function as it becomes necessary. He's parroting what he was told in that question as though he were saying it under his own authority as a Get Satisfaction administrator, as he remarked to Jim Smith below, referring to "Michelle, Craig or I." If he is an administrator, then he has seriously gone off the reservation and is abusing his authority.

A "problem" needing reporting is, for example, the search function doesn't work. Not "I can't seem to get along with others on the message boards." If you have problems on the message boards, stay off them and use the site, as it's intended...as a film information database.
