Adding more than 10,000 items on a list

On the Frequently Asked Questions About Lists it says that "there is not a limit to the number of entries on a list" but the system doesn't let me add more than 10,000 items on one. I know that the limit on a Watchlist is 10K but mine is smaller than that. Is this a common occurrence? Any more cases of a list not being able to be over 10K entries?
