When adding movies to my watchlist I just have to click the add to watchlist-button. It's easy, intuitive and rather fun. Adding movies to the lists that I have created myself however seems to be a whole different story. I have to know beforehand the titles that i would like to add, then i have to search for the title, browse through movies with similar names, then write the next title, browse through,,, It's not fun at all. It's tedious work and I'll never manage to build my "Movies That I Looking Forward To See"-list like that.

I wish there would be a similar procedure or at least an easier way.

You can actually already do this via the same widget you use to add titles to your watchlist. On every title page there's a 'Watchlist' widget that looks like this:

If you click your mouse on the menu selector indicated by the red arrow, the widget will expand to display a list of your lists, and you will have the option to choose which list you want to add this particular title to (or create a brand new list for it):

I guess what I intended to request starting this thread was as follows:

Regardless of what part of the IMDB site I am currently using I wish for all of the the Watchlist buttons and pull-down menus currently allowing me to add movies to my default watchlist to also containing the option to add the movie to my custom made lists. (In the "recommended for you"-section, in the "In theatres"-section, in the trailer gallery - EVERYWHERE!!)

One example of how it is today:
When using the function "recommended for you" I have to enter the movies own page (thus leave the "recommended for you" area) to be able to add it to one of my custom made lists. When re-entering the "recommended for you"-section I have to go through all the recommendations from the top.

Now that I have already added all the movies that I have seen to my default Watchlist I am done. IMDB is no longer a tool that I am using actively. If all of the watchlist buttons gave me the option to choose what list to add the movie to, IMDB would suddenly become a tool that I would use every day.

I didn't realize I had to enter the movies' designated page for the dropdown menu to appear next to the Watchlist-widget. So far I've been trying to build my lists via the "Recommended for you"-section (where there's no dropdown menu). Now I know.

Thank you for the excellent explanation.

Um... I've created lists, and I don't see this. All I see is "View Watchlist" and "New List"...

What gives?

Are you missing the little down-pointing arrow? Someone else reported this and it seems to be a browser issue - try using a different one and see if that fixes the problem.

I tried Firefox, Google Chrome, and MS Internet Explorer.

All of those browsers produce the same result. My created lists don't show up when I click the down arrow on the yellow "+ Watchlist" button. Only two items show up on the drop list: "View Watchlist" and "New List"...

Neither choice gives me access to my lists.

What else can I try?

Can you access your lists via Your Lists?:
http://www.imdb.com/profile/lists

As I say, I have had exactly what you describe occasionally (and you can't update the Watchlist or do anything else listy), but the lists return eventually.

I am have a similar issue. The dropdown menu has all of my old lists - from before imdb.com revamped its website - but any new lists I create aren't showing! I wanted to create a watchlist specifically for tv shows so I went to the page of a show I like, clicked the arrow next to 'Add to Watchlist', clicked 'new list', made a new list called 'TV', went back to the show's page & clicked the arrow again but no list called 'TV' was visible! Any ideas? I know how to add titles the long/hard way but there just has to be a way to add titles to any list I want from the show's page. Otherwise, whats the point?

The problem noted above is exactly what I'm experiencing. There is NO PULL-DOWN MENU from which I can add films to my lists. Not in Firefox. Not in MS-Internet Explorer. It's too bad IMDB decided to ruin a perfectly good system with one that does not work on two of the most common browsers on the market. It really sucks that they made such a horrible decision.

Are you using the old page view?

If not can you provide a screenshot?

By hunting around my Profile Settings, I stumbled upon my choice of Old Page View being checked. Unchecking it caused the pull-down menu to reappear. It's as if IMDB has a setting of "Cause our site to work lousy", that I unknowingly checked. Why they have setting, I can't say.

I agree that the interface is far from ideal, but there are a couple of workarounds.

1) You can always just add the items you want to your Watchlist, then, when finished adding, you can enter your Watchlist, sort by Date Added and move the ones you have just added to the appropriate list(s).

2) Instead of clicking on the Recommended title, right click on it and open the page in a new tab or window. Do the add-to-list thing, and close the tab/page. You will be returned to the page just as you left it.

The official help page has this note referring to lists:
"The dropdown is only available on the new style title page today. We will add it to the old-style view of the title page soon." (that was 3 years ago)

WTF does that mean to a novice user - not much. Translation if you ever want to see the big YELLOW WATCHLIST BUTTON and drop down list arrow (=little down pointing arrow head next to / part of "watch list" button near "top middle" of page you must turn this setting off:

"Always display full cast and crew credits " in preferences page

The fact that I can't have both at the same time is makes me hate IMDB user interface design.

So now what? If you end up on a "combined" page http://www.imdb.com/title/tt9999999/c... click left hand menu "main details" link and you will go to
URL like http://www.imdb.com/title/tt99999999/ (this is the "new style title page" they just assume everyone knows that - BUT OCCASIONAL VISITORS ARE NOT LIKELY TO REMEMBER THIS)

Then what? Well now all those links on the left hand side are gone and you see "new style title page". To return to combined layout page you need to use new top right hand side labelled "quick links" and then click the "Full Cast and Crew" link to get back to "combined" style".

An inconsistent user interface for user lists is a BIG FAIL in my opinion - it is now 3 years it has been like this. I guess hundreds of thousands of IMDB list users have been frustrated and muttered how do I add to my custom lists.

Fellow users I feel you pain too.

This is a pretty crazy setup, turning off "always display full cast and crew credits" in preferences still didn't make the yellow watchlist button show up anywhere. I had to click on the "main details" link on the left hand side of the page and only then did it appear.

@John D'Orazio comment:

As I posted earlier:
If you end up on a "combined" page:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt9999999/combined

then click left hand menu "main details" link and you will go to
URL like:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt99999999/

(this is the "new style title page"
If you are searching via the imdb.com search input box and you changed your settings as described, then you should have minimized the problem. The search result links to titles will land on main details pages (= that gives you watchlist button).  Actor searches don't have access to a watchlist button - how stupid is that.  Sometimes you end up on other pages (eg search link from a google search) and you need to change to "main details page".

(It is now Nov 2014 and this is still the kludgy imperfect behavior for people trying to use lists, but you get used to it)

This thread was helpful.  I agree the functionality should be available on either view, but I'm just happy I can add titles to my lists while browsing, without going to my list and looking them up in edit mode.

Now, I just wish the same was possible for people lists, character lists, etc...

Still have to navigate back to lists and edit, to add people/characters/images.  Lame.

I have the same issue.   I have 3 movie lists.  Only 2 show up under the Watchlist drop-down arrow.  I have tried other browsers, clearing cookies, etc.

My site settings are "correct" based on the comments above -- Always display full cast and crew credits is unchecked as is old page view.

Still I only get my first two movie lists in the drop down.

Interestingly, the same list DOES NOT appear in the iOS mobile app either.

I think there's an issue in the database or query being used to populate the drop-down and the mobile app.

I have found a workaround that fixes both the drop down in the browser AND the mobile access -- set the list to "Private" in the list options.
