Did a query on movies released in the last two years and got a list of results that completely ignored that constraint. I used to search like that before (in the past year) and it was good.

It seems to be working okay here. For example, http://www.imdb.com/search/title?release_date=2010,2016&sort=num_votes,desc&title_type=featu...

Do you have the URL of a search result which is failing?

... results that completely ignored that constraint. ...
In the Advanced Title Search form, the Release Date fields'
supported formats are exactlyYYYY,  YYYY-MM,  and YYYY-MM-DD.

For the  YYYY-MM  or  YYYY-MM-DD  format, be sure to use hyphens
(not other delimiters such as slashes).

Use two-digit values for MM and for DD,
as in e.g.:   2016-08-01  (not 2016-8-1).

If you don't follow those rules, the Advanced Title Search form
may produce a generic results URL without the specified dates.
