It loses the info because it does a Refresh of sorts, which also (in Chrome, not Firefox) deletes the Forward link to return to the results you just received without altering your prior search.
In Chrome, invisible after Back: the Name you've selected in Cast/Crew. However, just because it's not displayed in the Cast/Crew box doesn't mean it's gone from the search criteria. When you hit Search without making any changes, the Name is still part of the search. And there is no way to eliminate the Name from the search criteria without resetting the whole page (or altering the resulting URL.)
All this was tested with extensions/addons/scripts OFF. Chrome 63 on Chromebook and on Windows 10, Firefox on Windows 10.
This loss of criteria selected (and Name displayed) is NEW to the recent December updates.

I've confirmed that the list does not remain selected after using the back button to go back to the search. Other selected items are still selected.

I'm really reporting 4 bugs here. I don't think the first 2 have anything to do with ANS.
Let me restate them. After viewing search results, hit Back. The resulting REFRESH of the ATS page has the following bugs. (Does the page reload need to refresh? I don't think it did before; I know the prior version didn't start with the Include/Exclude boxes next to each other, then <flash>, vertically aligned.)
1. Lists are un-selected
2. Chrome loses the Forward link to return to results
3. in Chrome, Name box loses display, but name criteria remains
4. No facility to remove name criteria, even when Name is displayed.
And given how difficult it is already to navigate the ATS page (with only Scrolling to take you past large sections you don't want, only to miss the small sections you do want), to have to remember to RESELECT your List(s) (and find them in their tiny boxes) is really annoying.
Any plans to redesign the layout of the ATS page? I would love to give feedback to a DESIGN spec, instead of complaining about the result AFTER the work is done. I've added some specific suggestions on the thread https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/advanced-title-search-enhancement-requests?topic-reply-list[...

LOL, made me laugh. No, I don't write down the titles on index cards, but I do sometimes actually alter the URL manually to show "&sort=my_ratings,desc" instead of "&sort=my_ratings,asc", as that is often just as quick, or quicker, than finding and clicking the link. :)

On hitting "Back" the selected cast/crew remains displayed (and you can cancel it via the keyword or clicking the [x] if required).

These bugs remain (after Back):
1. Lists are un-selected
2. Chrome loses the Forward link to return to results
