The search functions are inadequate. You can only do at most two levels of search, meaning you cannot narrow your parameters much. Also, when you choose one of the main categories, then refine your search by keyword, only a pre-selected list comes up; there is no way to enter a keyword of your own. Very frustrating. The advanced search should have multiple filters present to begin with. You only allow certain pre-set choices.

Sounds more like you are browsing in and this gets inadequate quickly, with no real way to change parameters, hence this suggestion:

It sounds like what you really want is the advanced search page, where you can enter your own keywords and much more:

I agree with Mark, and I am quite sure you know he used the advanced search page already, so your suggestion is actually insulting or ignorant of what is being requested.  In the past I would do searches on IMDb and I easily found what I was looking for in movies or TV.  Now I have to wade through all kinds of Movies and TV episodes even when I am looking for a specific movie plot keyword.  I am disappointed as I once relied on IMDb for helping me research movies and write reviews.  I hope you fix your search tools and make it more useful.  You need more filters.  I shouldn't have to choose Title, Plot et cetera for both Movies and TV.  Why can't I choose one or the other or both? I should be able to put in a keyword and not have to look through all years of movie and TV material, but I should be able to choose a year or at least a small range of years.  You do yourself a disservice and I believe if left like it is and you keep referring people to your non existent "advanced search" (Because there is nothing advanced about it) it will cost you visitors and advertising.  Thank you.

since you're replying to two site users, you might want to lend a suggestion to actual site staff (which I assume you're trying to do, based on the "you's" and "your's") by starting a new (not year old, like this thread) suggestion, or "idea," thread on the board so others can comment or vote up your good ideas. Staff can track interest in the proposed changes to know if it's a popular and useful idea.

It actually, by the way, sounds as if the OP is talking about the side bar, pre-set parameters and not "advanced title search," to me too. He said he cannot enter his own keyword as only pre-selected ones come up.  That's no true in "advanced title search," which has an open field allowing you to type in a keyword.
