American Playhouse TV episode displays wrong genre

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107854/
is an episode of American Playhouse, for the opera Porgy and Bess.
Genres shown on its title page: Comedy | Drama | Romance | Sci-Fi
If you've heard of the opera, you should be laughing at Sci-Fi, and Comedy doesn't apply either.
When I go in to edit the genres, only one exists for the episode: Music.

The title page is, of course, picking up the genres from the Series record.
The problem is, they're not appropriate.

They're also what's placed on the title's record in an Export.

And worse still, Advanced Title Search by genre, does NOT find this episode.
Here's a search with a 2-item list constructed for this purpose:
https://www.imdb.com/search/title?genres=music&lists=ls023398584&view=simple

And yes, ATS for genre Sci-Fi finds this episode:
https://www.imdb.com/search/title?genres=sci_fi&lists=ls023398584&view=simple

Well, sometimes productions on well-known plays and musicals try to spice it up by modernising the play to includes sci-fi elements, but it doesn't seem the case.

I'd say that is the common problem about the series genre system in cases of anthology series.

I, too, suspect it must be a common problem with anthology series. I haven't looked through the episodes of American Playhouse, but I suspect it would be a bad thing to add Music as one of the series' genres.

So the solution lies with using the genre(s) specified on an episode, if they are. And it gets messy: is that genre Instead Of, or In Addition To, the series genre(s). Based on this case, Instead Of.

Episodes were not meant to have genres of their own listed. Your original example probably has one because it wasn't always listed as an episode.

Peter, considering how much anthology series there are, it probably would have been useful to have genres, to be fair.

Not to mention that musical, horror and animated specials do exist...

Wow. Especially given the deliberately varied nature of
Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color (1954–1991), 729 episodes
I'm surprised that genre's aren't supported for TV episodes.

So IMDb isn't designed to search for comedies among
Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955–1962) 268 episodes?

Oy.

I hope an official voice will chime in here.

To be fair, episodes as separate titles were not there from the start and sometimes it still shows.

Maybe a show whose genre varies widely from episode to episode should not have genres listed at series level at all.

gromit82, maybe we need a Genre "Anthology", and once it's attached to the series, no others can be (at the series level)?

Certainly with my root-post example (American Playhouse), the series-level genres are not useful. I doubt that many episodes are Sci-Fi.

@Phil Boroff
But if the series gets the genres of all its episodes, then all the non-Music episodes of American Playhouse look like they have a focus on Music? That's almost as bad as having all of them with Sci-Fi now.

This is not a clear-cut issue.

It IS a clear issue.  This policy just needs to be enforced.  Adding an Anthology genre is absolutely unnecessary.  The non-music episodes, for example, do not look like Music IF one goes to the keywords, and IF the keywords are correct.  Keywords and Genres are vey closely connected.  Done make something more complicated that it really is.

But someone has to contribute those extra keywords for Advanced Title Search (ATS) to be fruitful. And both the contributor and the searcher have to know of those keywords' existence.

Anyone looking at the ATS screen can see the Genres. The keywords are not so obvious.

To me, keywords are inherently complicated, because they are less consistently applied than genres, and they seem to come in an enormous variety which is counter-productive for searching, unless we had an OR operator.

One keyword that I try to help populate is "remake". Although movie connections show us that two or more films share some genealogy, I'm not aware of a search mechanism to find films that have antecedents. I found the keyword "remake" on a few, and started to look at a title's keywords whenever I learned it was a remake. I found a LOT of those titles did NOT have that keyword. It's also true that titles don't always have all the right genres, but I've seen far fewer of those than without the Remake keyword, because Genres are fewer and more prominent.

I just looked for keywords containing "tap danc":
https://www.imdb.com/find?ref_=nv_sr_fn&q=tap+danc&s=kw
The 3 most popular and best fits were tap-dancing, tap-dancer and tap-dance.
I have no way to get ATS to search for films with any of those 3, do I? I would have to search for each one separately, and merge the lists together by hand. And for the film Singin' in the Rain (1952), none of its 154 keywords contain the string "tap".

Perhaps with the new-ish feature to Refine lists by keyword, more people will know what's out there and start contributing more keywords that are less diverse.

I actually agree with bderoes - Anthology genre might be VERY useful, also for anthology movies as well. Sometimes anthologies have a lot of genres and having such a genre may quickly tell the users what's going on.

This is all "Much Ado About Nothing."  Anthology is a valuable and used keyword, so one need only access that keyword to know titles that are anthologies.

For anthology series, the series genres should include all episode genres. For a specific episode, use the genre with an "episode" addendum as a keyword, i.e.for Porgy and Bess, us the keyword "musical-episode."

For Porgy and Bess, Iwould also add the keywords "drama-episode" and "romance-episode."

Hi all,

You are correct, there is no functionality existing to add genres directly to TV episodes, apologies. In cases of anthology series please list the genres on the parent which align to the most number of episodes.

I hope this helps.

Will

The use of the "-episode" keyword addendum is for ALL Anthology series, and then ONLY for an occasional episode of a TV series that is "out of the ordinary" -- when a particular episode is unlike most other episodes of the series, i.e. Star Trek could conceivably  have an episode or two that could be a "musical-episode" or "comedy-episode," but "Musical" or "Comedy" would not be a genre for that series.

It's great that you added this to the keyword guide:
-episode Used on an episode of an anthology series to assign a genre where that particular episode is "out of the ordinary" and is unlike most others in the series i.e. "musical-episode".
But I think it's too restrictive. On this thread,  DavidAH_Ca, Champion posted 3 years ago, in part:
As an example,  Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997–2003) has Action | Drama | Fantasy as genres which covers almost all the episodes, but in  Episode 6.7 Once More, with Feeling (2001) ... so this episode (and only this episode) should have the genre Musical.
The definition as posted appears to restrict the *-episode keywords to only anthology series.

(The episode mentioned DOES have keyword musical-episode.)

If you update the definition to something like
-episode Used on an episode of an anthology a TV series to assign a genre where that particular episode is "out of the ordinary" and is unlike most others in the series i.e. "musical-episode". Especially useful for anthology series.
I think it would encourage appropriate usage.

Also, earlier on the Help Hub page, under the heading
Unacceptable keywords > Repeating genres
I'd suggest wording to refer down to newly posted definition, so that people who only read until they see their question answered don't get the wrong impression. Something like:

Repeating genres For example, we have the genres Romance and Drama so you can submit these as genres to the title rather than submitting the keyword romantic-drama. For an exceptional genre on a TV episode, see the "-episode" special keywords below.
I know it's specific to repeating genres, but someone scanning for help with genre-esque keywords might skim past that.

Also, the help text on the submission page itself is almost exactly what appears in the keywords guide Help Hub page you edited. I'd suggest either the little blue ? take people to the Help Hub page in a new tab, or the help that appears should match what's on the Hub. It's currently so lengthy, if I read what's there and then tapped over to the Hub, I might assume it's all the same.

Thanks for your, er, help ;)

Hi, everyone! :

Due to a recent thread I had to process the keywords.list file from the old repository. Taking advantage of it, and before it becomes (even more) outdated (data are valid as of 22 Dec 2017), I'll post here some results that have to do with the issues discussed above, in the event that some fellow contributors wish to undertake the task of sorting it all out. IMHO, section C is particularly interesting... Cheers!

A) REPEATING GENRES
The following titles have keywords that match one or more of the genres listed for that same title. Many of them should probably be deleted, though decisions must be reached on a case-by-case basis because some keywords (such as war-crime or horror-film) may have a specific definition/entity (rather than just a concatenation of genres).

B) MISSING TITLE GENRES
On the other hand, the following titles (non-episodes) have keywords that may refer to one or more IMDb genres which are missing from that same title. Many of those genres should probably be added to the title (and then the keyword be deleted), but, again, decisions should be taken on a case-by-case basis after careful scrutiny.

C) EPISODE GENRES
Will is right when he says that the functionality to add genres to episodes is disabled (in the same way that adding release dates to parent series is no longer possible); however, many episodes have genres listed (see below), mostly due to the reason explained by Peter. In many instances (64% of episodes) all the genres listed for an episode are also listed in the parent series, so they should be removed altogether; though I agree with Nikolay that if a series-genre only applies to a few episodes these should be tracked down and tagged with a [genre]-episode keyword, and this series-genre be ultimately removed as well, unless, as Phil stated, the parent series is an Anthology. The remaining 36% of episodes have at least one genre that isn't listed in their parent series, so, before removing it, it's up to us to decide whether the genre should be "promoted" to the parent level (if applies to enough episodes) or whether the genre should be transformed into a [genre]-episode keyword if this particular episode is "out of the ordinary".

D) EPISODE-SPECIFIC GENRE KEYWORDS
As of 22 Dec 2017 only 879 specific [genre]-episode keywords were in use, spread among 46 films/video/TV titles, 24 parent series and 756 individual episodes from 48 series, being "Li Xiao Long chuan qi" (2008) (50 eps), "New York Undercover" (1994) (24 eps) and "American Masters" (1985) (20 eps) the shows with most genre-tagged episodes. Some of these keywords are attached to episodes that also have the same genre listed; in accordance with IMDb policy, all episode genres should be removed, but these instances are fully justified because current info is redundant.

Yes, genres are NOT meant to be repeated as keywords.  That said, there are so many mistakes in the above entry that I really don't now where to begin.  For one example, Music and Comedy DOES NOT EQUATE with Music and Comedy.  A title that is a musical and Comedy should ahem both as genres, whilel title with Music and Comedy should have both of those as genres. (By the way, Musical and Music genre titles need continuous attention since there are many existing confusions.)

Titles that have the "-episode" addendum following a genre as a keywords are mainly meant for anthologies, as the guidelines now state.

I am completely repulsed by any attempts to do mass corrections. ALL titles involved should be individually audited as charges are suggested.

I guess it is interesting to list these concerns, but, far as I know, IMDb has no way to make such mass changes.  Only submitters like you and me can tackle them INDIVIDUALLY, so begin this arduous submission process.

Pointing out a problem is helpful, but working to solve the problem is even better.

There is also the situation with anthology series where a particular episode has the "genre-episode" keyword when the genre may match a series genre, but is used at the episode level to identify that particular episode as being a particular genre.  This may seem like a duplication, but it isn't.

I agree, but IMDb is a collaborative database where easing the contributing task for other users is part of the solution, especially when most of the listings I posted above cannot be retrieved via the standard search tools of the site, but processing and analyzing the FTP files, which...
     a) ...is something that most contributors aren't familiar with;
     b) ...allows a global view of a problem in order to determine the proper steps to take (better diagnosis, better treatment); it seems unfair to begin to make corrections in cases where official policies are undefined.

To put it in perspective... Since ATS is incapable of searching genres within episodes, if some dedicated contributor would like to find the 14,444 episodes with genres listed in section C) of my previous post and then check whether the parent series has that same genre, the shortest route (by using tweaked urls like https://contribute.imdb.com/updates?update=tt0000000:genres.correct.all/) would require two clicks (many more going the usual update form way) and page load times for every single episode of the database. Under the optimistic assumption of a minimum time of 10 seconds per episode, as currently there are 3,251,430 episodes, the estimated time to complete the work would be around 376 uninterrumpted days... Now those listings are just one click away (10-15 seconds) from every dedicated contributor who wants to participate in correcting the mistakes... I believe that offering a time saving of 99,999962% is working to solve the problem...

From the other thread:
Instead of just listing such problems, why not submit corrections?
Again, listing such problems is a way of recruiting more volunteers to submit corrections. For my part, I could be more active, but I'm trying my best...

Thanks ljdoncel for providing those details for other interested contributors. Unfortunately we as staff do not have the resources available to complete this given the amount of updates required but providing those numbers for a well-intentioned contributor to work through is appreciated.

Regards,
Will
