GetSatisfaction allows people to login using Facebook, Google, Twitter, Windows Live and Open ID but it'd be handy if people could login here using their IMDB details.

As the Help forum is closing down people are going to be left stuck if they don't use the above and I've read some comments from people over there that they won't be using this site because of it.

IMDB is a big site with a lot of users, so it doesn't seem unreasonable and it'd mean more people could easily switch between boards, so you'd not just get more people starting threads here but you'd get more of the posters from IMDB with a long history of helping people throwing in answers here too.

At this time, for a number of reasons this is not being planned.

I agree that it would facilitate the transition for many users but there are other obstacles that make this a bit hard to implement right now.

We might revisit this at a later date, especially if the community continues to be popular, but it's not something we are going to be able to consider in the near future.

In other words, "to get help on our website, you have to go and register at a totally separate website". The stupidity of that is staggering. But I suppose if anyone there realized that, they wouldn't be working there in the first place.

I completely agree that it's nuts that you need two completely separate accounts for IMDB and the IMDB support website. Completely unacceptable user experience!

OK thanks for the reply, I assume it'd need a more fully-featured API or a way to allow people to login remotely, and such a feature would have other uses, presumably it'd allow Facebook to add IMDB to the comments plugin if they thought it was a good idea:

Just curious if there has been any additional consideration of this idea.  This board seems to have more traffic than the old Help board so it seems to be popular.  And, off topic posting is worse on the I Need To Know board which is a valuable feature as it allows people to take advantage of the size of the site and the knowledge of other users when searching the database is difficult and not netting a good answer to film/tv questions. What's worse than just off topic posting there with Help questions is that staff on Contributors Help board is also moving Help topics there to get them off of the CH board.  So, that gives the impression off topic posting is welcome there. Posters of Help questions seem hesitant to come off site and create a new account just to ask a simple question.

It would be nice if this was reconsidered.

Reduced participation in support discussions may be one of the most significant impacts of moving such discussions to a third-party site. Some IMDb message board users do not want to post IMDb-related comments on a third-party site. Some want to post such comments only on IMDb. Even if IMDb login credentials could be used, some users will never be willing to post here.
