Why do you have to authorize your imdb account to reply to a message board?

In the past, you only needed a made-up email address. People abused the site, and when deleted, just made up a new name.

Now, you need to use real information. Theoretically, you'll be less likely to be abusive, but if you choose to do so anyway, you'll have authentication get removed and need to come up with a new ID. So now, actions to your account (like quota being raised, etc.) follow you to your new account and your history follows you and actions taken are more effective. Also, theoretically, you'll run out of new means to re-authenticate and you'll likely move along.

It had gotten to the point that when they announced this, their options were authentication or to just close down the board.
