I don't think that is an error (except possibly in the choice of font size).

It looks to me like they have just removed those default avatars, and this is the result for users who have not yet uploaded a personal avatar.

We will shortly deprecate our pre-selected 'default' gray-scale set which was a technical stepping-stone toward the full user-uploadable avatars. You may, of course, select one of these in the interim.

So, IMDB plans to leave the display like this? What if the user never uploads an avatar?

How long can it take to fix something like this? There are more pressing problems like the accented characters that display garbage. Why is there no test environment for this system? I've never seen a system developed with so many bugs out in the open before.

I absolutely could not agree with you more Drake, on both counts.

It looks like they are displaying the alt text automatically, when there isn't an actual avatar there. You either need to spot that there is no image and stop the alt text from displaying or slot in a blank/default image (as I thought they were already doing). It may be they've accidentally moved the default image, they are still linked in pointing here:

It is also worth flagging up that the HTML is a mess, before the avatar image you have two anchor tags open but you only close them once - it is flagged up in red if you view the source in FF and here is an example:
It isn't the cause of the problem, as it appears in everyones details, but shouldn't really be there as it might lead to unpredictable results.

Apparently a problem with one of their image servers and is now fixed:

If not I'm sure we'll hear about it, sooner rather than later.
