Could you please check the imdb rating for '[S]comparse' and for 'Lupo mannaro'. The average rating seems very low! Maybe due to 1 'top 1000' voter? This is having negative repercussions for me, and I don't think I deserve it. PLEASE CHECK! Thank you so much!

Weighted Average Ratings
IMDb publishes weighted vote averages rather than raw data averages. Various filters are applied to the raw data in order to eliminate and reduce attempts at 'vote stuffing' by individuals more interested in changing the current rating of a movie than giving their true opinion of it.

The exact methods we use will not be disclosed. This should ensure that the policy remains effective. The result is a more accurate vote average.
The Arithmetic mean and Median include all votes.

[S]comparse (2011)
15 IMDb users have given a weighted average vote of 2.7 / 10

Demographic breakdowns are shown below.
Votes Percentage Rating
6 40.0% 10
4 26.7% 9
2 13.3% 8
2 13.3% 7
1 6.7% 1

Arithmetic mean = 8.5. Median = 9

Lupo mannaro (2000)
31 IMDb users have given a weighted average vote of 4.2 / 10

Demographic breakdowns are shown below.
Votes Percentage Rating
10 32.3% 10
15 48.4% 9
2 6.5% 8
1 3.2% 7
2 6.5% 6
1 3.2% 1

Arithmetic mean = 8.7. Median = 9

In both cases, some of the higher ratings have been excluded for the weighted average vote. Although ratings are excluded from the weighted average for the majority of titles, it is more noticeable for titles with few votes.

I would like the "top 1000" voter removed. In both cases. When this happened with Lupo mannaro I did not understand it neither did I give it much thought. As you have removed those 'suspicious' "top 1000" votes off other small films, in which those votes have had real negative effect, please do the same for these 2 titles. I am working very hard to try to set up a new film, and I would appreciate it if those votes could be removed. Thank you. (It is possible that some of the '10s' there were given by people I knew, who were trying to be supportive, but how can 1 "1' by a top 1000 bring the average to 2.7?????

As you can see from the other thread, staff do look into this and (presumably, if they seem to be part of a suspicious pattern of votes) they have also been removing them. It'd be worth posting in the main thread on this over on the IMDB forum too as this should increase the chances of getting this looked into.

Dear Emperor, Thank you so much for taking the time to try and help me. I am a little green with all of this, when you say: "posting in the main thread on this over on the IMDB forum"... could you send me the link of where and how I should post my request to have a better chance that someone from imdb look over the rating issues? Thank you again... Antonio

Let's examine the math for [S]comparse (2011) further:

[S]comparse (2011)
15 IMDb users have given a weighted average vote of 2.7 / 10

Demographic breakdowns are shown below.
Votes Percentage Rating
6 40.0% 10
4 26.7% 9
2 13.3% 8
2 13.3% 7
1 6.7% 1

Arithmetic mean = 8.5. Median = 9

The Arithmetic mean =
(6*10 + 4*9 + 2*8 + 2*7 + 1*1) / 15 =
(60 + 36 + 16 + 14 + 1) / 15 = 127 / 15 =
8.466666667, when rounded 8.5

It appears that most of the votes have been excluded and top 1000 voter is getting additional weight. One possible scenario is

Demographic breakdowns are shown below.

Votes Percentage Rating
0 0.0% 10
0 0.0% 9
0 0.0% 8
1 28.6% 7
2.5 71.4% 1

Weighted Average =
(1*7 + 2.6*1) / 3.6 = 9.6 / 3.6 = 2.7

you're a mathematician! Thank you, that is most likely the mathematical reason... but the rational... I don't get it. The film got those good ratings (most of them I think) when it played at the Brooklyn Film festival (and won the 'spirit' award) there. the response was very positive, and yes, there were quite a few people that I knew, that knew of the film and came to support it. But they bought their txt and if they didn't like the film they would have either not voted or given it a 4 or 5 (it's anonymous!). So I still think to take ALL the high votes out is unfair... How can I get imdb's attention on this? Any hints. I appreciate your help!

The person who voted 1 for [S]comparse is NOT a Top 1000 Voter:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2082518/r...

See user ratings report for:
Votes Average
Males 6 1.4
Females 5 9.6
Aged 18-29 2 1.0
Males Aged 18-29 1 1.0
Females Aged 18-29 1 10.0
Aged 30-44 5 8.8
Males Aged 30-44 2 8.5
Females Aged 30-44 3 9.3
Aged 45+ 4 9.2
Males Aged 45+ 3 9.0
Females Aged 45+ 1 10.0
US users 11 2.2

IMDb users 15 2.7

Lupo mannaro (2000) has a disproportionate number of 9 and 10 votes and should have those votes removed.

Whoever it si that voted "1" for [s]comparse, I beleive has NOt seen the film. That voet must have come in pretty recently and the film has not screened recently.
As for Lupo mannaro, I imagine that a lot of the 10 and 9s are probably friends or friends of friends who has 'tried to be supportive'... but i guess that backfired. i still think that one 'bomb' vote (wether top 1000 or not) has a LOT of weight... I just would like someone from imdb to look at this and address it... any hints? (thanks for your time!)

Clearly the person who voted '1' did not see the film. IMDB has willingly turned a blind eye to top 1000 users randomly giving low scores to rating bomb titles that 'appear' to be getting unfairly high reviews. In their eyes its better to have a good film with a shit rating than a good film with an excellent one...
