From the 70s onward, with the vast majority of films being shot in color, it has become an artistic and/or stylistic choice to present a film in black and white. More often today it is used to pay homage to films of a begone era and invoke a sense of nostalgia, but it can also be used to help create a stark, emotionless, unforgiving world onscreen. Which of these films made most effective use of its black and white presentation?

Hi Galen and welcome to the GS poll board,
This is a very well-written and well-made poll. I think Lynch used black and white to great effect in Eraserhead, but as soon as I say that, I think that's true for many of these films -- 'tough choice, which I like in a poll. I'd probably vote for either Eraserhead, Manhattan, Paper Moon, or a really deserving one that didn't get many votes.
I see that you've listed the films in chronological order, which makes sense but, if you order it a little differently, I think it would have a much better chance of "going live." Often polls are chosen even if the poll probably wouldn't get a lot of votes, but sometimes it is a consideration and the way that your list is ordered now, most IMDb users, unfortunately, would not have seen, or even heard of, the first three films so many might just move on to another poll. However, if you include Young Frankenstein or Manhattan, for example, in the first three and then the other in slots four or five, that would probably insure more votes.
Again, welcome, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask :)

nice...haven't thought of hester street in ages...good inclusion...
as for my vote, 'manhattan' would be obvious, given my love for woody allen films, and 'radio on' was a really well made film, and 'lenny' is a classic (would work great on a double bill with 'talk radio')...however...
to answer your question specifically about the effectiveness...i'd have to go with 'the last picture show'...

Agreed, Manhattan is the obvious choice, though not without good reason. But yes, Last Picture Show is a high contender for me as well.

Of the eighteen movie titles that were on the list on the IMDb link, I going to have to choose "Young Frankenstein(1974)", with Gene Wilder, Peter Boyle and Madeline Kahn. It was the only movie on the list that I could show an interest in. Sorry that I'm no 'Roger Ebert', but who of us is, right?
