Ratings: Biased rating

I find myself biased by a title's current rating when submitting my own. E.g. if a Movie has a rating of 7.5 I automatically start thinking about giving it 6 or 7 if I dislike it, or 8-9 if it was a good movie. Alas, this is an issue in my own head but I think of myself as quite likely to be fairly representative for mankind. Would it be possible not to disclose average rating until I've submitted my grading or chose to show it?

What you mention is known as response bias. However, critical opinion and what your friends say about a film may have as much or more of an effect. It is difficult to determine how much any of these influence the overall ratings on IMDb.

Until/unless IMDb decides to implement your idea, I suggest you write down your rating on a piece of paper before visiting IMDb and rating it there. At least you will know that the IMDb average ratings have not influenced how you rate a film.
