Can the new option that automatically activates the drop down menus with suggested names whenever you type in anything in the name field while adding new names or titles on imdb be turned off since it's very distracting and also buggy and this bug sometimes deletes every name that was already typed in?

Sorry to hear about the problems.  The option cannot be switched off, but it should also not be buggy either.

Please can you provide more details on the issue with it deleting every name already entered on the page? Does this happen at random or is there an easy way to reliably reproduce the issue?  Also please can you let us know what system and browser (including version number) you are using so we can investigate further? Do you have any browser plug-ins installed which might interfere with the page, especially ad blocking software?

Thank you for your reply. The issue can not be reproduced, it happens at random. I mainly use two browsers - Opera and Firefox. This problem occurred twice in one week in Opera but thus far not in Firefox. I use typical Opera and Firefox ad blockers (Adblock Plus for Firefox and Opera popup blocker that's part of the Opera browser itself). Here's in more detail what exactly happens... I type in a few names and ignore the name suggestion box when it automatically pops up every time. I click on anywhere on the page and the box goes away. So far so good. However, those two times that I had this problem - at one point or another, the suggestion box instead of going away freezes for a few seconds and then when it "unfreezes", every name I typed in in the name fields up to that point disappears. However, all the data that I've typed in in the character name fields or the occupation and the attribute fields stays as is and does not get deleted like the typed in people's names do. So the bug is clearly tied to the people's names fields and the name suggestion box itself. On the other hand, if I type in several names, hit the "check these updates" button and then continue to type in more names, and then the freeze happens - every name that I've typed in before I clicked the "check..." button stays as typed in and only the new names that I've added after clicking the "check..." button vanish. Also, if I click on a name shown in this pop up box, visit the person's imdb page and then hit the return key to get back to editing - all the names typed in up to that point disappear just like in previous cases (but just like in previous cases, the attribute, job and character name fields keep all the data that I've typed in before clicking on the name). You could argue this is a bug solely native to Opera but I need to test it more on Firefox before I can be sure that it doesn't happen there as well. If you want feedback on the pop up names suggestion box itself, I'd strongly push for changing this box from an automatic to an optional feature, since it's more often than not that you want to either add new people, and the box is useless then, or you want to add new roles for people who never worked on anything that famous, so the pop up suggestion box is again useless since you first need to check in the imdb search which of the people with the same names is the one you're trying to identify. The pop up suggestion box is only useful if you're adding someone who is already famous or you know exactly what's the roman numeral (if any) next to their name on their imdb page or the movie they stared in.

Hi,
Thanks for providing additional detail.  It appears your web browser is refreshing the page.  Unfortunately, I'm having a bit of trouble reproducing or figuring out why.  In your message you state:

Also, if I click on a name shown in this pop up box, visit the person's imdb page and then hit the return key to get back to editing - all the names typed in up to that point disappear just like in previous cases (but just like in previous cases, the attribute, job and character name fields keep all the data that I've typed in before clicking on the name)
After selecting a suggestion, the name becomes a hyperlink.  Selecting it "should" open a new browser tab for the name, allowing you to verify the name is the person you want.  Your main browser window should remain "as is". Are you experiencing something different?  I'm not sure how you are hitting the return key to get back to editing (and possibly refreshing the main page?).

I've tested with Opera (block ads turned on), and the link opens a new tab. If you can help explain what happens for you, it will help us troubleshoot.

Thanks again for all your help, and I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.

Thanks,
Nic

Thank you for investigating the matter. It seems I was wrong when it comes to that specific part of the issue. Since you didn't experience the same problem, I tried to click on a random name (John Smith III for example) from the drop box menu and see what happens in Opera this time. This person's imdb page opened in the same window (it never opens in a new tab; always in the same window, but this isn't important). However, this time when I pressed either backspace on my keyboard or clicked the browser's "go back button" or "left arrow icon" in the upper left corner (that's what I meant when I wrote "return button", sorry), everything was fine this time. My previous editing page reopened and I didn't lose any typed in data this time. Therefore, I was wrong here. This option (to visit the imdb page of a person from the dropbox and then go back to editing) is not an issue. Sorry. I should have tested this better before reporting it. On the other hand, the freezing issue did not go away. It doesn't happen always (maybe 10 or 20 percent of the time) but when it does, it's pretty infuriating. As I said in my first post, sometimes after I add several names for some new title, the "dropbox" at one point simply does not disappear after I type in something but freezes instead. After a few seconds it "unfreezes" and I lose every name typed in thus far (unless I clicked the "check these updates" button before the bug happened) but everything that I've typed in in other fields stays typed in. I guess the easiest solution for me is to simply switch to using Firefox when editing information on imdb for the time being but I don't get why Opera out of all browsers has this bug. I guess it might be caused by Opera itself (or the way I've set up the browser's options) and not the imdb website but whoever the "guilty party" is, it's pretty annoying. Anyway, thanks for trying to resolve this. Since this issue is not easy to reproduce, I understand why this problem might be unsolvable.
