I guess yahoo had a wonderful app that functioned as Shazam does for music but for movies and series. It would listen to films and tell you what movie that was. Couldn't you have something like that?

Not sure what the point of it would be.

With music you often listen to the radio and random songs come on, you aren't sure what it is and need a way to find out. That app serves this purpose.

With Movies and TV series; when are you on a network that has "random" shows? Anything you are watching can be looked up in the networks schedule.

The value is even lower with streaming sites as you will always be told what is being streamed online.

There's also the fact that movie/tv data is going to take up massive amounts of more storage space for comparison than songs do.

What you are asking for would require monumental amounts of storage space; a very complex system of identifying software pieces and quite frankly serves no function.

In addition to what Vincent wrote, IMDb could not implement such a feature without licensing the technology from Shazam. Shazam has a large number of patents that cover their ability to recognize and identify music and other audio.
