I could have sworn I verified my account months ago, but today I logged in again after being away for awhile and IMDB insisted that I verify again. I went through the cell phone verification and it seemed to work, but then when I got into my account it still asked me to verify my email. So then the site made me jump through a bunch of hoops...

First, I went to my account page. I clicked on the link in this box, despite not having any such email in my inbox (or maybe the email was months ago when I first verified):

Please validate your account. To enjoy the full benefits of your IMDb account, you need to click the link in the email we sent to the email address you provided.
That took me to this page, "What are the advantages of registering with IMDB?" Um. Except I'm already logged in. (When I clicked on the "Registration" link on this page, it told me so as well.)

So I went back to my account page, and I clicked on "Validate your account" under the PROFILE CHECKLIST section, which took me to this page. But said page has no link for resending the confirmation email...are you serious?

So I went back to my account page again, and I tried "Your Account", under the PROFILE CHECKLIST section. And there, finally, is the link to resend an email confirmation. But then, when the email finally got to my inbox, and I clicked on the link, it went straight to a page that says:

Registration

We are sorry you were unable to identify the words shown and complete your registration. If you would still like to register with IMDb please contact our help desk for advice.

I never got a page with a captcha to finish my registration. Also, when I click on that help desk link, it redirects me to a page to register for IMDB Pro.

Are you serious?  First I have to re-verify when I already did months ago. Then I can barely navigate the site to find the link to resend the email. And when I get the email resent, it fails. Then the help page redirects me to a sign-up page for a premium service I don't want. And finally, to even get help about this situation, there's no simple email address contact. I instead have to register a secondary account here.

I really don't understand how this is acceptable. Like, do you even want people to use your site? There's no way this kind of ridiculousness is okay. I just wasted thirty minutes trying to get what should have been a two minutes process to work.

Edit: I'm also having this problem, which apparently has been around for OVER A YEAR. Why have people not been fired yet for this gross ineptness?

Re:  "I'm also having this problem..."

I think they meant the link to Get Satisfaction, not the log in help link which only works if you cannot log in. Yes, you end up on the same page, if you're logged in, but if you can log in, you shouldn't need to click that link.

Two things are needed when registering, if you want to use certain features, like posting on the message boards.

When you register, you need to verify the email you gave by going there and opening the email and clicking the link.  Now you have an account.

To use certain features, you need to "authenticate," with a cell phone number or credit card number. That allows you to use the features, like posting. This is done to reduce the amount of abusive material being posted on the boards.

If you missed the email, or it went into your spam folder, etc., and you need it to be resent, try https://secure.imdb.com/register-imdb/please-confirm-v2

Keep in mind, kids and grandparents use the site, so leaving profanities, as you've done here, can get it all wiped away.  So, when you get it all sorted out, you might want to watch what you post.

I hope that answered your concerns.

It's pretty obvious that you did not read my post in its entirety, or perhaps at all, as I described what happened when I resent the confirmation email. You also glossed over the part about how I registered months ago, verified then, but for some reason need to verify again now. You also ignored the part at the very beginning where I said I already did the cell phone verification.

Thanks a lot for telling me a bunch of stuff I already knew, and adding absolutely nothing to this thread.

bluesman -- That is not the captcha I am referring to -- I see that one just fine when I log in. Please reread my post. I never said i had any issues logging in. My issue is verifying my account. The message about verifying a captcha is what shows up when I click on the verification link from the email in my inbox.

This is not an issue with verifying a NEW account. It's with the site demanding that I re-verify an account that is 1.5 years old (according to my Account page), and that was registered with an email address.

I really don't understand why both of you have failed to read my post, and have instead made HUGE assumptions that I have other problems with the site, which are completely off base.  I was pretty clear and even provided a step-by-step process to get to where I was. It's not just annoying, it's incredibly disrespectful and insulting.

Perhaps you misunderstand.

When I stated: I attempted to recreate your issue; I brought an account up to the same point you were at. As in: the account was functional and email verified and was than attempting to validate the account.

I can't exactly test it with my normal account which is nearly a decade old (and has been verified and validated and has a 0 posting timer delay, etc) or my original account which would have been nearly 15 years old if I had not lost access to the earthlink email it was attached to.

Let's make something clear, email verification is not the same thing as account validation and one does not substitute for the other.

I supplied the error screen so that when IMDB looks into this issue, they have as much information as I can supply.

I would suggest you add as much detail as possible as well.

I've worked in software and hardware testing, vague descriptions of what is wrong can lead to hours of a tester trying every variation of a problem and still finding nothing unless they have the exact steps to end up at the same error screen as you. Or you can post the error data itself so it is easier to pinpoint.

I do not see how attempting to recreate your issue or supplying additional information to the subject is annoying or insulting.

A good portion of your "step-by-step" assessment didn't make any sense.

For instance, you said:

Please validate your account. To enjoy the full benefits of your IMDb account, you need to click the link in the email we sent to the email address you provided.
That took me to this page, "What are the advantages of registering with IMDB?" Um. Except I'm already logged in. (When I clicked on the "Registration" link on this page, it told me so as well.)
The reason you get the link to check on what the benefits are is so you can decide whether you want to continue and click the link to verify.  None of that has anything to do with being logged in. You can log in and not verify or you can log in, verify but not authenticate, or you can log in and verify and authenticate.  Your whole comment there has nothing to do with your problem.

I wholeheartedly agree that the link to re-send it should be there.  You might suggest it to staff by making an "idea" thread on this board.

Other than that, that is kind of a wasted section of your post as it really doesn't have anything to do with your main issue (other than it made you take longer to figure out how to re-send it).

I never got a page with a captcha to finish my registration. Also, when I click on that help desk link, it redirects me to a page to register for IMDB Pro.
Again, you might suggest they fix that...the reason it sends you to a page to register for IMDb Pro is because the wrong contact form is there.  It's the one to the Pro Help Desk form and if you're not logged in to Pro, it suggests the registration page.

I really don't understand how this is acceptable. Like, do you even want people to use your site? There's no way this kind of ridiculousness is okay. I just wasted thirty minutes trying to get what should have been a two minutes process to work.
I don't know what to tell you.  I don't see anyone else reporting this type of issue.  I can say, I've registered in different ways over the years and have never had any of these problems.  I would bet, that since they have millions of users, the issue is not occurring to the majority of people and seems quite limited.

You said:

That problem did not actually exist (if you read it entirely you should know that), though Giancarlo did admit it could be worded differently.  It was a misunderstanding regarding a way to contact staff if you cannot log in (and, you're stating you logged in, right?..so, not a problem and not the same issue you're having). Which I actually explained in less detail above.

Someone should be fired because a comment could be written more clearly?

I never said anything about any "captcha's." Who needs to read whom?  Should I now yell at you in bold emphasis (and curse and throw a tantrum?)?

The main page says:

Note: this is a public forum: anything posted here will be visible to everyone.

For issues regarding accounts or questions involving non-public information, please log into your IMDb.com account and contact our support staff privately via this form.
Vincent mentioned what he did about having created a new account, possibly by logging in Via Facebook, etc., is because that's usually what created the problem in a good number of posts here.  If this had been the case with you, the result would be the same, you'd get a request to verify and authenticate.  His experience is that it should be mentioned first since none of those with the problem think they've created a new account and usually think the problem they're having is with an older account. He did good work trying to locate the issue by narrowing it down and taking the obvious out of the equation.  It's odd that you accuse others of being disrespectful when you start out with an F-bomb and are yelling in bold at others because you can't register an account.

Don't bother with any replies to me.  I won't see them.

I am having similar problems and have had an account for ten years. I don't understand this except it seems that it is a good way for many to give up and buy the premium..but with these glitches,I don't want to do that either.

I had to get a whole new account because after my yahoo email was hacked I needed to change my email.. But they insist on using my yahoo to verify the new email. Well I can't use the hacked account,I get no messages with it. This is common.

So I got a new account, after being with these guys for ten years. Then I go to post.i was in the middle of several things, plus I privately email with someone. So now I run into this verification problem. They want my cell number,fine..I follow the easy steps and after two days and too many tries to count I get no text from them and the reasons they give for this are not the present in my case.

So,if I want to continue with IMBD,my favorite site...I have to pay $$$ and get a premium account..there is no other way to stay a full member like have been for ten years...I keep saying that ..lol

Now things happen. I get it..what the real problem here is that they willl not offer any real way to help you. No phone number,no email, nothing but this rant page.

I also get that there are many vile ,angry people on the site who troll and abuse.. But for all of us to suffer once again because of people who misbehave is the only reason I can think of that all this has become so difficult and getting worse ,apparently. That is just wrong. There are ,have to be better ways. It has to be because it is free at this level..

After the hack, which is happenening to millions!! I had to do this simple thing with many, many sites. This is the only one that has given me so many problems. And there is no one to talk to about this. Very sad! Many would say unimportant,,it is a stupid internet site about movies. Maybe there isn't any good competition??

I just want my account back..the hours this has taken
In a busy world is absurd. And nobody cares. Crazy! I wonder if anyone with the authority to do something with IMDB will contact me? There is no good reason for any of this to have happened.. All I needed to do in a world that IS THE INTERNET NOW,was change a simple email address.
