Chapaak ratings sabotaged

Due to the recent unrest in India certain politically affiliated people are sabotaging the ratings of the recently released film Chapaak on IMDB because the lead actress Deepika Padukone stood in solidarity with the protestors. This is yet another way for them to blackmail anyone who protests against them by holding their career to ransom. These ratings are just not commensurate with the actual movie. When absolutely stupid B grade films don’t get ratings that low it’s obvious there’s foul play at work. I would request you to investigate and remove all bot and suspicious ratings. Or display only authenticated movie critic ratings. This would be a bold move on IMDBs part to protect the interests of the creative industry from being bullied around the world.

Hello??????????
Hollywood has this same problem with titles.
Bollywood is not exempt.
Welcome to our world.

Please read this about vote stuffing.

Thank you for sharing your concern, all IMDb can say about voting is covered in the FAQ at https://help.imdb.com/article/imdb/track-movies-tv/faq-for-imdb-ratings/G67Y87TFYYP6TWAV

Thanks Ed. The FAQs were quite helpful. But IMDB needs to be more transparent about what are the safeguards they have against this kind of practice.

If that transparency was revealed, then people would have the formula and know how to defeat it.
So it remains secret.

I think you should delete all the one star reviews because it's obvious that these are by people who have boycotted and not even seen the movie. I am sure IMDb should be able to do that

I think you should delete all the 10 votes as they are bought and paid for and are not real.
I'm sure IMDb should be able to do that.
My statement is as absurd as yours.
IMDb WILL NOT remove any votes.

Well, all I can say then is that IMDb, which is one of the most credible site where people swear by their ratings will lose credibility. I have nothing to gain or lose but it's a shame that the system cannot protect itself. This movie has been highly appreciated by indian and non indian critics such as globe and mail and variety. Rotten tomatoes stand at above 80 percent by critics and audiences. Good luck

Suresh. Read the whole post before you make unfounded accusations.
The system does indeed "PROTECT ITSELF"
You just ARE NOT paying attention.
PLEASE READ THIS. I have now posted this 3 TIMES

Voting protections are covered in the FAQ at https://help.imdb.com/article/imdb/track-movies-tv/faq-for-imdb-ratings/G67Y87TFYYP6TWAV

Those 1 and 10 votes almost DO NOT EXIST in IMDb's secret software formula for the weighted average system.

YOU UNDERSTAND? IT'S LIKE THEY DO NOT EXIST!!!!!

That film has a bad average based on the 2-9 voting and the top 1000 voters counts only The 1s and 10s DO NOT COUNT

Just to be clear, I think it's extremely childish to vote for a film you haven't seen and/or vote for a film to make a political statement.

Why do you believe this rating is being manipulated? You have a problem with the 1 votes but not the 31% that are 10 votes? Also, it takes quite a bit to become a top 1000 voters and those voters vote it even lower. Maybe, it's just a bad movie.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Unwarranted abuse of ratings.

Indian movie Chhapaak 2020 ratings are being deliberately given false because of the lead actress participating in National protest for equal rights. Kindly take a look.

Any body notice the LACK of 2-9 Votes.
Most notably the 6, 7 and 8 votes that usually tell the real story.
There are literally no votes at all.
It must be really bad to not have a larger percentage of these votes!

Ed, not sure if you’re aware of what’s happening in India right now. People have been divided by a bill that’s been passed, those for and against it. The rating is a reflection of this polarization. There are more negative votes because of a political party that normally uses an army of trollers to attack anyone who goes against them, which is what the lead actress in this film did by standing with protestors. Maybe this piece will help shed some light.

You can, of course, prove that what's happening in India is affecting the rating of this movie. No? Of course, you can't. The rating may reflect a polarization but, of course, you aren't complaining about the 10 votes which are just as bogus as the 1 votes. Again, the top 1000 voters, which are an elite group of voters who rate a ton of movies, rate this movie even less than the currently shown rating. It's just a bad movie. Accept it and move on.

Are the top 1000 users super special beings unaffected by politics? Kindly take a look at movies made by this director (solely) and their ratings. And by the way stop taking 9 people as a yardstick for judging a film.

Here’s a rating by authentic viewers of the film (https://www.google.com/amp/s/in.bookm...). The reason it’s likely to be authentic is that it’s a ticketing site and generally users leave reviews after they see the film.It would be wise to look at everything before passing judgments.

Here's a preview of those "authentic reviews" as claimed by you.

- Reviews are re-ordered by popularity.

All I see is negative reviews. Now since you said it yourself that users on that site are genuine and are most likely to post an "authentic" review. I believe we both can now pass our judgments based on those reviews.

Note: I haven't seen the film, nor I care about what's going on around the world. And this is why I have nothing to do with it personally.

Ed, not sure if you’re aware of what’s happening in India right now.

Are you aware of what happens in Brazil?
Are you aware of what happens in America?
Are you aware of what happens in Australia?
Are you aware of what happens in Germany?

I pay attention to the world as a whole.
Your situation on this movie IS NOT UNIQUE!
We get people that come here a minimum of 20 times a year crying FOWL about some such political this or controversial that on a variety of films.

IMDB has voting protections in place to compensate for this very scenario.
This movies problem is the top 1000 voters are absolutely brutally honest.

You: "Are the top 1000 users super special beings unaffected by politics?"

Pretty much yes is the answer. They are longtime members. Trusted members. Not a registered yesterday voters.
If you'll notice their combined average is 3.8. Less than the overall average.

So I will repeat myself ONE MORE TIME

This film lacks "REAL" voters. There are very little 2-9 votes. Real persons vote in this area. Handing out a 1 or a 10 is almost an impossibility if you are honest in your evaluation.

Now this 1 and 10 vote thing is prevalent in nearly ALL films all over the globe when there is controversy. Get over it.

Check out this fact about films from India.

If you look at the IMDb top 250 films and compare the percentage of the 10 votes to all of the films in the 250, you'll notice that Indian films are skewed because of the misuse by your nation of voting any Indian title a 10 so as to get it into the top 250 because you are all proud of the Indian Film industry. But pride is not an evaluation in reality of a titles greatness. It is dishonest. The practice needs to stop.

Yes I am aware of actors and directors and movies that are controversial.
In all nations.

Please live with this global vote stuffing issue.
IMDb has protections in place to counter this.

Voting issues are covered in the FAQ at https://help.imdb.com/article/imdb/track-movies-tv/faq-for-imdb-ratings/G67Y87TFYYP6TWAV

Ed all this while I was having a conversation with no attempt at condescension. Your tone certainly suggests just that. So no I won’t get over it just because in the past there have been instances of Indians acting like idiots and trying to manipulate the system for a whole different set of reasons.

You may say you know india but frankly the context is critical. Perhaps the exact same things are happening all over the world or maybe each circumstance, even though they are all political, is different. Understand that first. America loves to paint the whole world with one brush.

As for the top rated users, when leading actors in this country can act like morons and spew venom how can they be unbiased? That’s a joke.

Lastly, if this is a worldwide problem don’t you think IMDB ought to address it? Last year Twitter took a stand and barred all political ads. It understood its role in spreading misinformation. I don’t have the answer but IMDB needs to understand it’s influence. Platforms that don’t curate, die.

I don’t plan to respond any further since it’s deteriorating into a fight and we all have better things to do. It would have been better if we used this forum to solve issues. Cheers.

I was not insulting you at any point. On the contrary I thought you’re someone i could reason with and learn from. You should understand that not everyone who comes here is a pro at this and to them their problem is the biggest. Sharing your issue on a public forum is for healthy debate, not winning or losing an argument. I had a genuine problem and came here to correct what I believe is a wrong. Not to win an argument.
