Hi Wings1295,

I've just tested the check-in feature on the latest version of the IMDb Android application and can confirm that it is working properly. Can you please let us know what Android OS version you have currently installed, which mobile device you are using, along with which IMDb Android application version you currently have installed so that we can investigate this further? In addition, do you recieve any errors when attempting to check-in? If so what does the error state?

Thanks,
Kurt

I tried again, and it doesn't worked. I uninstalled and reinstalled the app, doesn't work. I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 phone, updated, using Android OS version 6.0.1. My IMDb app is version 6.4.1.106410100. The error when I check in just reads "Error checking in" - been that way for 3 days now.

Hi Wings,

We have the same device with same OS settings that you are using which may help us in troubleshooting this issue; please attempt the following, go to 'Settings' then 'Application Manager' then find IMDb and click it, select 'Storage' and finally select clear data and clear cache. Then out out and back into the IMDb Android application and attempt to checkin (please make sure to try a different film this time), if you still get an error please let us know.

Thank you,
Kurt

Did all of that this morning, didn't work. Tried it all again now, following what you posted, same result. Error. I went onto my laptop, am signed in to IMDb and tried to check in from there and got this message: "Could Not Update Check Ins" in a red box with a red X in the corner.

Hi Wings,

Rest assured this issue has not been forgotten, as it's tied to a larger issue our technical teams are still actively working to resolve this. Per my last reply as soon as I have a resolution to share I'll respond here.

Cheers,
Kurt

The check-ins feature is amazing, but would be the best thing ever if the option to link it to one’s Facebook page (versus profile) existed. I would use the feature in that case. But, nothing but praises! IMDb is such an amazing portal for the world of film and TV!

Truly one of my favorite sites!!! Thanks. Thanks. Thanks.

Hi Ruth,

Thanks for the feedback and suggestion. I recommend create a new 'idea' thread with your suggestion so other can view it as this thread is specific to a currently issue being worked on.

Best,
Kurt

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Cannot Check-In, list contains too many items.

Hi,

I can't check in any more items. On the website it just gives me an error without further info, but in the IMDb app it tells me "HTTP status 400: List contains too many items"

It would seem the check-in list can only hold 10000 items, a limit that I've now reached.

Can you increase the limit? It seems like a weird limit to set if you want your users to check in everything they watch. Or how else should I use this feature..? :)

Thanks!

Still unable to check in, on computer or on app. Guess it is just no longer a feature. With that gone, and the message boards, I pretty much just browse a show or actor and leave. Not much else to do here.

Do you have the same problem, that you have reached the limit of 10000 check-ins? You can look up the number if you open your check-ins list.

Gustav - You are correct. I just checked and my list also reads "(10,000 Titles)"

So, unless they undo this cap or expand it greatly, we will be stuck indefinitely.

That sucks.

Thanks for suggesting I look.

Ah, ok. Weird that IMDb didn't acknowledge that and just said it was tied to a larger issue. I guess there is a general cap on (most) lists, but since lists like "My Ratings" doesn't have this cap, it's not totally unsolvable, but probably also very low on the priority list.

However, this also means you can continue to check stuff in if you delete/move stuff from your current check-in list. You could for instance select all the stuff by year and move it to a normal list called "Check-ins 2015", "Check-ins 2016" etc.

That would of course destroy the data of the exact date/time when you actually checked each item in, leaving you only with the year of the list. But since it's been 4 months without any progress on this, it might be the better option if we want to continue using the check-in feature. But that also makes question why we should use the check-in feature, if it will only result in us having to delete the data after a while (granted, probably five or so years, but still).

They could of course fix the issue in a week, and if you've deleted the data to add more things, you can't move it back. A predicament :)

I can't see the point in deleting things to just add more that would be deleted in the future. If that is the case, the point of the Check In feature is moot. They either need to extend the cap or remove it. Otherwise, it is useless.

(Not sure you get notifications on nested comments, so I'm creating this comment on the base thread.)

Hi IMDb, can you look at the nested discussion above regarding the "solution" of moving stuff from the check-ins list to new lists, and comment on it..?

Since it's been 4 months without any progress and since it affects a very low percentage of users, I understand that this isn't prioritized, but can you still check with the technical team to get a estimated solve date on this?

Without that we are kinda stuck in limbo unable to decide if we want to destroy our current check-in list to make room for new entries or not.

Thank you to everyone for your patience.

Our technical team has confirmed that the item limit for all IMDb lists (including the Check-In list) is 10,000 items.

As mentioned above, as a workaround, you can move the titles to separate by-year lists where you can also add notes to titles to record specific check-in dates, if preferred.

Thank you for your understanding. Please let us know if we can offer any further assistance.

Thanks for the follow-up, Claire!

I take it this means you're not going to extend this limit?

That seems to defeat the purpose of the Check-In list, but maybe I've just misunderstood how you're suppose to use it. I was using it like a history of what I've watched, as it says "Track What You Watch".

I guess I could just use the "My Ratings" list for this instead, as that list can hold more than 10,000 titles, but sadly that does not have the great feature of letting me add stuff to it more than once as I rewatch stuff, and I do want to know how many times in a row I've watched Home Alone on Christmas morning ;)

So, you might want to make the Check-In list another exception to the 10,000 limit rule, as this is a special list, just like My Ratings, or in the end everyone will hit this limit and probably stop using the feature (and feel tricked that they didn't use another site for keeping a watched history from the start.)

Moving old stuff away is a workaround, yes, but why should I then even use the Check-In list in the first place..? I could just collect the titles directly into by-year lists instead. And I want to be able to use the filters on all of my watched history at once, not just by year.

And adding 10,000 notes by hand seems like a LOT of tedious work, especially as it still destroys the data in the way that I cannot sort on when I actually watched the movie.

Either way, thanks again for getting back to us with information so that we know why it doesn't work for us, and please get back to us with answers/comments on the above if you're able.

Have a great week!

PS. You might want to change the error message on the website for people who hit this limit. At the moment is just says "Error Please try again!", which is not a great message for this error, at all :)

So, basically. It's not going to be fixed. Makes the Check In feature useless to me, now. I am not going to keep moving and deleting items. Would be easier just to use my own document. Oh well.
