Since we can compare ratings now, it would be very useful I think to have a compatibility list. You could use it to find users with similar tastes and find new things to watch. Rateyourmusic has a feature like this. I'm not sure how it works, but by looking at their "compare" feature I would guess it works like this: if for one rating the other person's score is two points above or two points below yours or anywhere within the range between those two points, it will count it as a close enough rating that it adds to your compatibility score (and I think they go two points either way for the benefit of people who like to use a five-point scale (like me), or maybe so that scores won't always be incredibly low since most people have such wildly varying tastes). Anything else lessens it. An exact match might add to your compatibility score even more. Using this score they rank the top 100 highest scoring users for you, and they have a bar beside the usernames that represents the relative score.

The benefit of having the list is that you don't have to click through the profiles of every user on the entire site to find the ones most compatible with you, and most likely to recommend you something that you'll like. Not to mention that it's annoying to click through a bunch of profiles and see that none of them have made their ratings public. It's like, why bother looking at all?

Isn't this how they do the Explore User feature now?

Looking at my profile:

http://www.imdb.com/user/ur5268055/

There are 2 users with public ratings:

91% (because they've only rated a few film):
http://www.imdb.com/user/ur3919448/

62%:
http://www.imdb.com/user/ur7875217/

Then if I reload it I get one with a 20% compatibility:
http://www.imdb.com/user/ur36801011/

So perhaps now.

I'd definitely like it if these Explore User feature sorted by compatibility and then linked to a larger list. However, it might be it'd be too much server load.

Emperor,

From what I've been able to determine the list of users provided by the Explore User feature do not have ratings that correlate well with the user profile page. The majority of the ratings are not even public. My best guess is that the list is drawn of users is drawn from active users. Maybe one of the IMDb staff members can tell us how these users are selected.

If they could that'd be very helpful - as far as I can tell it is just random.

I'm sure we've had a previous discussion about compatibility along the lines of having a "the user liked these films that you haven't rated" recommendations as well as the liked more/like less sections, which would then make this section of the profiles (and a list of people with similar tastes) much more useful.

If I understand your post correctly then those features have already been added to the site. Although it is pretty odd and annoying that they don't give a list of titles with similar ratings, as if that is somehow not relevant to how compatible you are. But anyway, if both users have their ratings made public then you will see all of this stuff.

So they have (although they should really pick them from the genres you have rated the most, but that is fine-tuning), now all we need is a way to find those with visible ratings (as it took my half a dozen clicks from the explore bar to find one), which is where your suggestion comes in....

It's tragic that the best compilation of user ratings on the web till date is not doing more for this compatibility between users. This can be so much fun. The Movie suggestions offered by IMDB is never so good. User compatibility would make it perfect. They could add this feature to IMDB PRO.
