Corecting a combined songwriter credit.

There is an entry

“Peter Callander Mitch Murray” - nm9763204

Somehow this entry has been made by combining the names of two songwriters into one entry.

  • Mitch Murray - nm1098920
  • Peter Callander - nm0130309

It has only credit.

I believe the entry should be amended and that the composing credit be given to the two individuals.

I am not sure about the best way of amending this as it is not a straight merge of one name into another. I could remove the link from the credits and replace it with those of the two individuals, but that still leaves the entry in the database.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

Or is it something for a staff member to do?

Graham: I recommend submitting, in the same data submission, the following changes to the Composer credits for this film: a delete of the combined name "Peter Callander Mitch Murray", and adds of the separate names Mitch Murray and Peter Callander (I).

When you submit the delete for "Peter Callander Mitch Murray", please provide an explanation along the following lines:
Peter Callander Mitch Murray is not one person. It's a mistaken combination of the names of two separate composers, Peter Callander (I) and Mitch Murray. I am submitting the separate credits for each of the separate composers in this same submission.
After this correction is processed, it's possible that the name page for the combined name "Peter Callander Mitch Murray" might remain in the database for some time as you suggested ("that still leaves the entry in the database"). However, since the combined name will no longer have any credits, it should eventually be removed from the database. And if the staff reviews your explanation for the deletion, they may remove the combined name sooner rather than later.

Good luck!

So, the individual names have been added to
But the combined credit is still there.

Graham: Yes, I was wondering what had happened.

Please post your last full data submission here on this message board. You can copy it out of the receipt you would have received from IMDb by e-mail immediately after sending it in. (Also, please include the submission reference number -- it's an 18-digit number that will look something like 200123-123456-789000.)

I have done a little research and they are referred to as Murray-Callender. Much in the same vain as Simon and Garfunkle, Hall & Oates, or Peter Paul and Mary. So a deletion really should be a correction.

On IMDB, performers are generally credited by the name of the performing group, as per your examples above -
  • Simon & Garfunkel
  • Hall & Oates
  • Peter Paul and Mary
But songwriters are credited individually -
"John Lennon" and "Paul McCartney", not "John Lennon Paul McCartney""Burt Bacharach" and "Hal David", not "Burt Bacharach Hal David"
"Jeff Barry", "Ellie Greenwich" and "Phil Spector", not "Jeff Barry Ellie Greenwich Phil Spector", etc.
Murray and Callander should be credited individually for their Songwriting/ Composing credits. I am trying to correct their credits and bring them into line with standard IMDB practice.

As your research showed, they are known as songwriters and producers, not performers. My research has not revealed any instances of them performing as "Murray and Callander" or under any other variation of their names. There is no need to have an IMDB entry, “Peter Callander Mitch Murray” or any other variation.

Graham: I agree that this is still a problem that needs to be corrected to remove the combined name. (Fortunately, at least the individual songwriters have received their individual credits.)

I looked at your data submission and the way you submitted the correction appears to be fine. I don't know what the "unable to verify" problem means here when the need for the correction is pretty much obvious on its face.

Hopefully we will be able to get the IMDb staff to respond to this problem, but I don't know when they will do so. Until then, I don't have any other good suggestions.

Thanks for your support, Gromit.

Sometimes, I find that I submit something that is glaringly obvious to me and find that it is declined.

There is an occasional feeling that whoever received the submission did not read it or did not understand the "nuances" of the words I used.

I then have to come here to explain the situation, my correction and the reason for it. Usually this results in the change I requested originally, though not always.

I have another submission in a similar state of limbo.

Hi Graham -

Thanks for identifying the error, the incorrect name/credit has now been removed from the Composer section of the title page.

Cheers!
