As we all know, apart from odd case-to-case scenarios most of use that we have for "(credit only)" attribute in cast sections are episodes of TV series, because in most cases main cast members will be credited in each and single episode regardless of whether they actually appear in such. There is, however, no evident consensus on what should we do in cases when actor actually appears in the episode, but in archive footage only. Logically it should leave them with appropriate number in the credits and "(archive footage)" attribute, however people seem to use different approaches to such cases.
There are cases when "(archive footage)" is not a reasonable choice because scene was filmed with multiple episodes in mind. While I can't remember any main cast member examples from the top of my head that happens from time to time with TV shows. Examples include Ray Wise in "Twin Peaks" (his two appearances in Part 2 and Part 18 is basically the same scene; however show was filmed as one big piece, therefore this scene was filmed with an intent of being used in both of them), as well as recent oddity that was appearances by John Wesley Shipp and LaMonica Garrett across "Arrow", "Supergirl" and "The Flash" with both of them only being credited on the latter. While it is the same scene, it was filmed with an intent to be included in all three series, so it technically doesn't count as archive footage.
A similar case is evident with "Legion" episode Chapter 17, where Dan Stevens's only appearance is in the scene from the previous episode. Until recently he had "(credit only)" on that episode but it is now has no attribute whatsoever.
Finally, today I stumbled upon another oddity with "The Flash": Jesse L. Martin does not appear in any new scenes in recent episode What's Past is Prologue, but he is credited and appears in a snippet from one of the previous episodes (seamlessly edited with the new footage). Oddly enough his listing on IMDb for the episode now has a cruel and unusual combination of both "(credit only)" and "(archive footage)".
So, as guidelines does not mention the specific algorithm: should cases of archive footage plus main cast "(credit only)" situation merit "(credit only)", "(archive footage)" or both?
