Why am I unable to search for crew members anymore? The film industry made this site popular by using it as a tool to network with each other.

J J Lewis, I am assuming that you are referring to IMDb as opposed to IMDbPro. If you have problems with IMDbPro, someone else will have to address your concern.
A few months ago, IMDb changed their search methodology. It is still possible to find crew members, although they will typically be listed after more widely known people such as actors, directors, producers and writers.
For instance, I was able to easily find a J.J. Lewis
Costume and Wardrobe Department | Art Department | Costume Designer.
Note: I had to select See all results for "J. J. Lewis"
Other people have complained that they do not like the new search methodology.

I understand that there would be a search population of more widely known actors, producers, directors, writers with the same name. However, there is a list of 50 people before you actually get to "JJ Lewis" and none of those people are named JJ Lewis. This doesn't make sense. When somebody is typing something into a search field it is because they are looking for something specific. If I went to google and typed in "brownies" but I only got pages of cookies and cakes until the 50th search population, then it wouldn't be a very popular search engine.

J J Lewis, you have identified the fundamental complaint that many people have with the new IMDb search engine. It is a reasonable expectation that items at the top of a search would closely match the search terms.

As DD says there have been complaints and it'd be an idea to add such feedback to the main search thread here:
http://www.imdb.com/board/bd0000040/n...
Staff were taking account of feedback on there and, while I don't think there have been any major changes, I assume some of this will be incorporated in future updates (hopefully once it has been tested thoroughly).
