Did anyone noticed that the IMDb Message Boards were copied by MovieChat.Org website?

I can firmly tell, that the entire IMDb Message Boards were copied by this site:-
https://moviechat.org

Here is a living example, wherein my post back 2 years ago, on the IMDb boards, were copied, which I wrote about the great M. Night Shyamalanhttps://moviechat.org/nm0796117/M-Night-Shyamalan/58a8c3cb39e8d70675861dde/M-Night-will-win-an-Oscar...

My username is kaustavsinha10, but there is no hyperlink on it! It's a stealing!!!

I think, the IMDb Staffs should take necessary actions against this website, and delete/ban it, if possible! What do you say? Being a huge lover of the IMDb, I say this!

Kaus S, as you might know (or not) IMDb Message Boards were fully deactivated and deleted. It seems that this website took care of trying to archive and preserve what was there with some additional continuation.

I can understand! And, I respect! But, this is unfair. Some might even copy the GetSatisfaction IMDb too.

Kaus S, archiving something is not stealing, though. I can totally understand why someone would have wanted to make a copy of message boards before they got demolished. However particular website you brought into discussion, Moviechat.org did it rather shadily, while Wayback Machine is a non-commercial organization that has all the right in the world to what it does: archiving the pages of Internet, before some of them are gone forever. I don't know where to start on how helpful Wayback Machine at preserving some very needed pieces of information.

And no, it's not some mysterious hacker stealing the info. Almost everything on Internet is a collective effort, at least in cases as big as that. You can't do that on your own.

Sorry, I just did not wanted any confusion, but thought of mentioning this... I've no involvement in this, for God's sake! Can't this site (https://moviechat.org) be deleted? Why should it exist? They are robbing others' property!

Internet does not work like that. No one simply deletes website unless someone has it taken down (which usually requires rathr radical and difficult means), domain expires due to not being paid in time or it gets demolished by its own creator.

In all other cases it would take a court case and A LOT of paperwork. It is something very odd about that MovieChat.org website, as it is seemingly trying to preserve and continue IMDb Message Boards, but the only statement it actually has on a subject is a tiny and suspicious "MovieChat is not affiliated with IMDb, IMDb Message Boards, or Reddit" at the end of its own copyright notice.

I will do my best to notify the staff (although they would probably discover that, eventually) as copying from IMDb is very common, but I've never seen cases as specific as unhinged copying of every single message board.

Making a website unreachable to from a significant portion of the computers connected to the Internet sort of requires state intervention which itself may not be sufficient. The people who run a website can be ordered by courts of law that have jurisdiction in the region in which the site's servers' point-of-presence on the Internet is located to remove content that violates the applicable law (including international law) in that region, lest they largely face forfeitures of licenses, permits, trademarks and things of that nature, but possibly criminal charges along with seizure of the servers. I've never heard of it getting to that point, as far as non-contraband violations go.

Yeah, it's awkward. A bunch of people's posts from the shutdown IMDb·Com message boards are archived on a two or three different websites, and most of the archived IMDb user posting histories make no reference to the actual IMDb "ur" URLs from which they originated, whereas "IMDB v2.0" is something of a low-energy imitation of the IMDb topical boards.

This is just terrible! They should atleast acknowledge that, these posts are from the IMDb website, and that, they reserve no rights to the contents. Anyways, there are many odd peoples too residing in this world lolz! Take care. Peace.

Hi, Kaus S. In the specific case of MovieChat, you may be able to sign up there and secure access to its echo of your IMDb user account handle/activity. The administrators there confirm ownership of a handle by asking the owner to paste in some kind of uniquely-generated key to their IMDb user profile description, but I'm not sure if they still do this anymore, or if they ever did for that matter.

The boards software was out of date; and due to boards being a burden to the people responsible for managing the site, whilst countless participants of the system did little more than complain about other participants (whether they were trolls or not), the software behind them was not worth updating right away. Understand?
