The Weighted Average Ratings for titles with small number of votes simply does not work well. It is widely misunderstood and leads to great concern from independent film makers. Do not report the Weighted Average Rating for a title unless it has at least 30 (preferably 100) votes from regular users. Instead report that there is an insufficient number of votes to accurately calculate the Weighted Average Rating.
Weighted Average Ratings
IMDb publishes weighted vote averages rather than raw data averages. Various filters are applied to the raw data in order to eliminate and reduce attempts at 'vote stuffing' by individuals more interested in changing the current rating of a movie than giving their true opinion of it.
The exact methods we use will not be disclosed. This should ensure that the policy remains effective. The result is a more accurate vote
