This help page seems to suggest that a film only counts as theatrical on IMDb if it received an "initial wide release or premiere" in a theatre, "excluding festivals, film market screenings and other special events". However, it only differentiates films from TV programmes, so how it relates to online content is unclear. It was briefly discussed here, but there has been no input from IMDb staff.
Many modern short films are released online after the creators attempt to screen them at festivals. If a film only screens at a festival or a once-off cinema event outside of a festival before being released online, does it count as theatrical or made-for-video?
In other words, does the original release define the title format (as it does with the title itself and the release date) or is it defined by the wide release?
