Does an online film that debuts at a cinema or festival screening count as theatrical or made-for-video?

This help page seems to suggest that a film only counts as theatrical on IMDb if it received an "initial wide release or premiere" in a theatre, "excluding festivals, film market screenings and other special events". However, it only differentiates films from TV programmes, so how it relates to online content is unclear. It was briefly discussed here, but there has been no input from IMDb staff.

Many modern short films are released online after the creators attempt to screen them at festivals. If a film only screens at a festival or a once-off cinema event outside of a festival before being released online, does it count as theatrical or made-for-video?

In other words, does the original release define the title format (as it does with the title itself and the release date) or is it defined by the wide release?

Matt: I was about to respond in more detail, but looking at your past thread at https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/adding-internet-shorts-as-made-for-video-not-clear, I would have been repeating myself from there. (See my second comment on that page for what I would have said.)

The more recently published submission guide for title formats (https://contribute.imdb.com/updates/guide/title_formats) says:
The way in which media content is released to the public is constantly evolving; some of our title types though relevant at the time are no longer applicable to some of the titles released today. This is an area we will look to address once we have completed the migration to move all areas on the site from our existing infrastructure. Until we can define these titles appropriately within our systems please use the existing title type that most applies to the title in question. Please note that IMDb reserves the right to amend any titles where we feel that another title type is more applicable to the title in question.
I personally would classify a film that premieres at a film festival or one-off cinema event and then is released online as a theatrical title, but that is my opinion.

Hi Matt -

In agreement with gromit82 for this case, if the film was initially screened at a festival, it should be listed as a Theatrical title.  You can then add the release information for the Online release to the Release Dates section on the title page.

Thanks for clearing that up. Personally, I think the guidelines should be a little clearer, but I'm glad I know what to do now.
