In this early 1970s movie I saw on TV (it may not have been a TV movie) a middle aged man cheats on his wife with a younger man who looked like something like Richard Thomas, but it probably wasn't him.

The man's wife suspects something is going on but at first fears he's seeing a woman. She somehow finds out where he's been going to and knocks on the door. The man answers and for a few tense seconds she can't figure it out, but then it sinks in and she starts laughing hysterically, repeating several times in a smoky voice, "you and my husband, hahaha, you and my husband..."

This theme would have definitely stood out in those times, and on the old IMDB board someone suggested a Michael Douglas movie I don't remember (did someone save and upload the archives?), but I'm not sure this scene is in it.

This site has some of the old message board content:

Thanks, I saw that but for some reason it's only the last few months' worth. I had posted at IMDB earlier than that and when I found it had all disappeared it was too late for me to try and archive it myself.

Thanks to you I just found the old IMDB post where I asked this before. The movie someone suggested had Martin Sheen and Hal Holbrook, not Michael Douglas. But I don't think it was That Certain Summer unless someone remembers the scene I mentioned.

I've never seen it, but I don't remember what I saw having been British. Do you remember this specific scene? I can't imagine the young gay kid later getting together with the guy's middle-aged wife (not "a young woman in her mid-30s"),
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunday_Bloody_Sunday_(film)
as the central character apparently did in SBS from the beginning.
I would guess the couple was in their 50s.
Of course way back when I saw part of it on late night TV 30s seemed like 50s to me.  :)

Sunday, Bloody Sunday (1971) was discounted in one of those archive posts. It does seem like a good candidate.

In SBS = http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067805/reference, Glenda Jackson would have been 36, Peter Finch 55 and Murray Head, as the young bisexual, 23. I don't recall that specific scene.

I would guess the scene I described happened toward the end, and like I said there was definitely nothing going on at that time between the wife and the gay young man. If something did develop between them after first encountering each other in such a scene it would have been pretty weird. I got the impression that this was happening in an environment in which anything like this was seen as a scandal, and that they would all have been humiliated.
On the contrary, SBS's Wiki says, "Finch's homosexual character is depicted as successful and relatively well-adjusted, and not particularly upset by his sexuality."

From the story description, I can confirm that it is not "Sunday Bloody Sunday." The characters in the movie are either single (Finch's character) or divorced (Jackson's character) who have a relationship with an artist (Murray Head) at the same time.

I'm sorry that I cannot be of help with what you described. Good luck.

It is 100% the movie Terraces from 1977. It was a pilot for a tv series. 100%

Thanks, that's it, I also found the trailer for it on YouTube, and the guy does look and acts a lot like Richard Thomas.

Maybe the whole movie is out there also.

I thought it was an old lady 40 years ago, now she's starting to look good to me. Frightening.

It was on Netflix on demand for a while. I'm sure if you search the net you will find it. Glad to help :)
