REPORTING MULTI-POST TROLLS
One of the problems in reporting a poster with multiple posts is that the reporting feature limits you to reporting only a single post. Once the single post is reported, you are unable to report the other posts of a multi-post spamming event. You will get the message:
Thanks, we already have sufficient abuse reports about this user
Administrators will be processing these in due course

 ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

I use the following to report MULTI-POST trolling events:

1) I opened one of the posts in the spamming set for reading

2) I click on: Flag > Report Post

3) For Reason for Complaint: I select “None of the above”

4) For Details of Complaint: I copy and paste the information below including the “===” boundaries

Note: I had to take some of these posters off my Ignore List to use the reporting feature. I used the following posts for these user accounts at the links below for reporting:

=======================================

A brief statement of the type of trolling event, its duration, and number of accounts involved

List accounts that are involved:

USERNAME01  http://www.imdb.com/user/ur12345678/

USERNAME02  http://www.imdb.com/user/ur12345678/

Etc.

NOTE: I would report each USERNAME separately with different reports

List any previously known USERNAME sock puppets that have been deleted:

SOCK01           http://www.imdb.com/user/ur12345678/

SOCK02           http://www.imdb.com/user/ur12345678/

Etc.

-----------------------------------------------------

Here are the offending bumping posts:

-----------------------------------------------------

BY: USERNAME01        http://www.imdb.com/user/ur12345678/

Link01

Link02

Link03

Link04

Link05

Link06

Etc.

NOTE: an easy way to collect the link information is to go the trolls posting history and right-click and open each post in a new tab. You can then copy the link (URL) information directly into the space above.

***************************************************

REQUEST #1 per IMDb’s STATED POLICY (list the policy that has been violated):

If necessary, you should state why the Ignore Feature does work for this type of event.

Quote the applicable part of the policy and add an explanation of how the current trolling event violates the clause of the quoted policy.

Per your IMDB STATED POLICY Policy, I request AN ACTION from IMDb

***************************************************

=======================================

Policies to include as part of the Report above are:

Board’s Terms and Conditions http://www.imdb.com/help/show_leaf?boardstc

Message Boards Etiquette http://www.imdb.com/help/search?domain=helpdesk_faq&index=1&file=boardsetiquette&ref_=hlp_sr_1

Conditions of Use Policy http://www.imdb.com/conditions

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

I have 3 questions for the administrators about the above approach

1) Is this approach useful and effective?

2) If I create such a report, can it be shared with other board members via a post on the board**

3) If I create such a report, can it be shared with other board members via a Private Message?

**When using a board post for this information, the trolls invariably report the post as a violation. Eventually the post gets deleted by an administrator.

Hi StoryTeller,

What you wrote is very close to what I do when reporting flagrant conduct on IMDb. Other IMDb Champions and I recommend this method when reporting multiple violations.

1) I believe it is effective.

2) I strongly recommend against sharing such a report on a public message board.

3) I would use caution with whom you share this kind of information via Private Message.

Note: I am not an IMDb staff member.

Can you elaborate on your reasons for #2 and #3 above?

Been recommending that method for a decade or so now...I also believe it's the way to do it and agree with Dan's comments above.

2) I strongly recommend against sharing such a report on a public message board.

People who abuse the IMDb message boards may retaliate by making false reports against those who report them. You also open yourself to be part of a flame war.

3) I would use caution with whom you share this kind of information via Private Message.

It is not uncommon for trolls to have puppet accounts. Some of these accounts may appear to be an antagonist to the troll, in hopes of identifying who is reporting the troll accounts.

D*mn! It is just one big game to them! I'm trying to relate this type of gamesmanship to some other aspect of my personal life and I'm coming up empty!

Thanks very much for your insightful reply.

Since I already incurred their wraith with my public posts using the template above, my posts are routinely being reported (what a turn-around of events). Do you have any advice about handling this improper troll reporting? Or is it simply a matter of waiting out the storm?

Hi StoryTeller,

Unfortunately, once you get on the radar of a troll, there is very little you can do other than wait out the storm. Until the storm abates, I recommend posting as little as possible and not post about trolls on the message boards.

IMDb has over 3 million message boards. It is impractical to have human moderators for all of these message boards. It is also very time consuming to investigate false reporting. It is difficult to distinguish false reporting from a troll from false reporting due to a flame war.
