When a series is created, you're given the option of entering an end year for the series or ticking the box to say that the series is on-going. I can't test it, but presumably adding an end year makes the series year appear closed (e.g. 2000-2002). If not, it should. However, if the series only lasted one year, you can't add the same end year as the start year because it gives you an error warning that you can't skip. I recently created this series, which only aired in 2014. I entered 2014 for the start year and didn't tick on-going. However, as you can see, the date range appears as (2014-) as if it's still on-going.
It seems weird that the way to mark a series as only going for one year is to not enter an end date nor tick on-going, and clearly that way doesn't work. It would be better if you HAD to enter an end year or tick on-going for all series, no exceptions, and would get an impassable warning if you didn't ("????" could be used for an unknown year as with the start year).
This problem is made worse by the fact that the series end year information is not editable after the series has been created, as noted in this thread, which has yet to receive admin attention.
