How do I exclude countries in advanced search? The not (!) operator doesn't seem to be working anymore.

Hi there,

I've forwarded this information to our technical team. We'll reply via this thread once we receive further information.

Thanks for your patience!

Claire: See the thread at https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/-option-doesnt-work-in-advanced-title-search-new-version. In that thread, Faye V, who I believe was then an IMDb staffer, confirmed that the not (!) operator was no longer supported.

However, as that thread indicates, there are some users who would like to see that functionality restored (and there probably aren't any who would oppose having that functionality restored), so I would encourage the staff to put that function somewhere on the list of ideas to be implemented. (See also https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/the-advanced-search-tools-should-be-more-advanced-like-being..., where a similar idea is discussed.)

Hello,

Our technical team has confirmed that our Advanced Title Search does not include the ability to exclude specific countries from searches at this time.

I recommend using the "Countries" filter currently found in the Advanced Title Search in order to include only the countries you wish to include in your search.

We'd like to thank you for your feedback; this has been forwarded to the appropriate team. Please know that while we are unable to confirm if we will be able to implement your suggestion regarding the Advanced Title Search, we do consider all feedback from our users when considering future updates for our site. I've changed this thread to an "Idea", where it can be reviewed by other IMDb staff and users.

Let us know if we can offer any further help.

Well right now you can't use countries to filter out the ones you dont want. By including multiple countries, the site will search for movies associated with all those countries (AND vs OR). So there is no way to exclude anything. The feature existed but for removed.
It's a rather sad state of affairs if a so called advanced search does not provide proper exclusion methods.

I second that.
Frustrating as my search is flooded by indian movies that I'd like to remove.
Please, add the feature back.
Thank you.

This feature is very useful - for example I am not interested in Bollywood movies at all - so now I have to search separately for english, french etc movies in advanced search? This is not very practical way to get results. Please consider bringing back this functionality.

It is clear that we are looking forward to having this function for the same reason. It makes no sense to have so many Indian movies at the top of the list and no way to remove them. Please bring it back

I too would love the exclusion feature back. Happy to try the work around but I can't seem to figure it out. For example:
I recommend using the "Countries" filter currently found in the Advanced Title Search in order to include only the countries you wish to include in your search.
When I try and select every country except India I get an error when I search. I'd say the URL would be getting too long. Anyway else got the advanced search working for every country except India?

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Modern search capabilities.

I suppose it should't be a problem to add such useful features to this great site.
e.g. if I want to find action and not a drama movie with imdb rating not less than 6.0 and released on or after 2010, as for now I have to go through the top rated action movies and check each of them whether it is suitable or not...

Please IMDB. This shouldn't be very difficult to implement.

Misjn et al,

IMDb recently updated Advanced Title Search (ATS) to allow the use of the not ("!") operator.

You can exclude a county by putting ! before the country code.

Compare:
Feature Film Afghanistan (Sorted by Popularity Ascending)
https://www.imdb.com/search/title?title_type=feature&countries=af&view=simple&count=250

... with
Feature Film Not Afghanistan (Sorted by Popularity Ascending)
https://www.imdb.com/search/title?title_type=feature&countries=!af&view=simple&count=250
