How can I exclude a genre in a search? I want documentaries, but not stand-up comedy or concert films. So I want all films that have genre=documentary, but do NOT also have genre comedy or music.

I don't think it can be done.

Working on the way you can exclude lists, the format would be:
http://www.imdb.com/search/title?genr...

However, as you can see, it just kicks you back to the advanced search page. There isn't any reason this can't be implemented though and it'd be worth doing the same for type (especially as video games also get listed on IMDB and I'd often like to exclude them):
http://www.imdb.com/search/title?titl...

It can actually be done. I got a PM about this and have encouraged them to post the full text (I'm rushing at the moment) but you can do something like this (feature films):
http://www.imdb.com/search/title?!gen...

or this (everything):
http://www.imdb.com/search/title?!gen...

Thanks Emperor, sounds promising but I click those links and get the same comedy films listed as I do without exclusion, however. The Turkish guy (CM101MMXI Fundamentals) with the 9.6 rating still shows up on both lists.

I haven't checked, but this excludes two genres doesn't it?

http://www.imdb.com/search/title?!gen...

Got an example of this not working?

Thanks for following up on this. That is the way it should work, so hopefully staff can look into this and fix it (shouldn't be too difficult). Unless we're missing something crucial.

I think vertical bar can help here see:
http://www.imdb.com/search/title?genres=comedy&!genres=action|animation&sort=num_votes
vs comma:
http://www.imdb.com/search/title?genres=comedy&!genres=action,animation&sort=num_votes

Is it possible to exclude genres with the following logic: NOT (animation OR (crime AND mystery))?

I'm not aware of any way to do that.

Some time ago, I experimented privately with a simple workaround (using a client-side browser extension and a line of CSS code) to put a visual cue, such as a bright red border, on a specified genre word such as "Animation" in search results.  These visual cues helped me to quickly notice and either focus upon or "skip over" search results that had the flagged genre.  I don't use that workaround anymore.  I can't share the details here because I don't know if IMDb would disapprove.  (If it is a useful idea, I wonder if IMDb could consider providing an approved way to add such user-customized visual cues in search results?)

I do not know if it is the same that I want but... I think it will be great if we can search for only one genre, for exemple here: http://www.imdb.com/search/keyword?mode=detail&page=2&genres=Horror&my_ratings=exclude&a... I do not want; comedy horror, or drama horror neither thriller horror, JUST HORROR. Impossible to do it.Ty (West).

The search page should have a select for 'and' 'or' at the genre selector.
