If you can identify other similarities that would help the viability of the poll. For example, I'd accentuate, just a bit, that they both write and direct. They don't have the same number of Oscar wins or nominations but perhaps they have the same number of films on IMDb's top 250 or some thing(s) like that. The less arbitrary it seems, the better.

I like Tarantino's movies more than Nolan's, however he is also a great filmmaker and I think even better writer than Tarantino.

Nolan is a genius.

Tarantino is a lunatic.

How can this even be a legitimate comparison?

This is like comparing Einstein to some guy in a lunatic asylum with a straitjacket on and a Haldol IV screaming that he is Jesus.

Honestly, I don't believe that I'm comparing orange to apple here. Both are directors and writers, I'm simply comparing two people who are doing the same job.

If you believe that "Nolan is a genius" and "Tarantino is a lunatic", that is fine because the poll is asking which one you prefer, but I think that it can be an interesting poll because I know for a fact that Tarantino and Nolan are among the most appreciated directors today.

Personal Opinion:

I wouldn't say that Tarantino is lunatic, but as a Nolan fan I believe that Nolan is a genius, I also believe that Tarantino is self-absorbed and snooty in interviews.

That's a really strange answer. Just because Tarantino might come off as weird in interviews doesn't make him a bad filmmaker. Some of our best directors are completely nuts, and yes, self-absorbed as well.

In terms of sheer entertainment value, Tarantino wins by a landslide. But in terms of thoughtprovoking, fascinating stories, Nolan has the upper hand. So they're both extraordinarily talented in their own unique ways.

NVanKerr, I respect your opinion, but... No. That's not a great comparison when it comes to two professionals who are well-versed in their craft and are both, also, artists. Not to mention that stigmatization of people with mental health problems is also a bad thing, one of the worst, in fact. God knows how many geniuses were transformed into full-on ineligible "lunatics" thanks to the fact that standardized society thought that they should cure weird quirks of theirs.

It was especially horrible in the Soviet Union, where punitive psychiatry was in place and overall approach was to pump people with chemicals. People were lucky to be semi-coherent after that.

That and Tarantino openly admits he's not exactly the most professional director, merely a very experienced ex-amateur.

Nolan's movies have more substance.
QT relies a lot of style.

-QT finds a better balance between telling and showing
-QT is good at directing action, Nolan is rather bad at it
-Nolan has Ledger, but apart from that, most of the performances in his movies are very restrained, whereas QT has gotten more out of his actors
-Nolan's minor characters tend to be forgotten within an instant, whereas they often have interesting moments in QT's films
-designs, colors, objects, clothes, etc. make QT's films alive and memorable, whereas Nolan's are very sterile and more uniform
-Nolan's choice of music is interesting in Inception and perhaps Interstellar and Dunkirk, but all in all, QT is more varied in this regard (also Morricone > Zimmer)
-Nolan has a gift for condensing complex societal themes and incorporate them into blockbuster entertainment, while Tarantino's attempts at this were only half-successful
-Interstellar is more or less a dumbed-down version of "2001"; when QT references other filmmakers, he improves upon them or at least treats them originally enough that something unique emerges
-both managed to write some of the most famous lines of recent cinema, but much of Nolan's dialogue only serves to advance or explain the plot, while it also has a right to live on its own in Tarantino's case

So all in all, Tarantino over Nolan.

"-QT is good at directing action, Nolan is rather bad at it". Do I have to remember you that Nolan directed the best action movie of all time according to the IMDb ratings.

I will look at it with an objective view (I'm excluding any subjective analysis about their values):

IMDb (average)
Nolan: 8.25/10
Tarantino: 8/10

Metacritic (average career score)
Nolan: 67
Tarantino: 65

Rotten Tomatoes (average career score)
Nolan: 69.73
Tarantino: 61.74

Conclusion:
Nolan: 3
Tarantino: 0

I don't believe that Interstellar is a dumbed version of 2001: A Space Odyssey. You can compare both, but I think that they are similar in terms of "intelligence". However, "2001" is more philosophical. Anyway, for me, there are no things such as "dumbed-version". He was not trying to imitate A Space Odyssey. Obviously, each time you make a space movie, someone is gonna reference it to "2001", but I don't think that Nolan fell on the trap of copying the style of Stanley Kubrick.

He said himself before the release to Entairntment Weekly:

“Whenever you’re talking about getting off the planet, 2001 is somewhat unavoidable,”
“But there is only one 2001. So you don’t want to get too near to that.”

The numbers you cited are accumulations of subjective opinions. I neither believe that movies can be measured in numerical terms, nor that something is right only because enough people say it. I believe in the idea of the Enlightenment, that each should use on one's mind to come to conclusions, and that together we can exchange arguments to understand more and arrive at even better conclusions.

Have you clicked on the link I provided? Nolan is unable to structure a coherent action scene. The youtube analysis makes it pretty obvious. However: I didn't even notice that when I first saw The Dark Knight. The tension doesn't come from the action choreography, but from the urgency and clarity of the story, some dialogue parts, and sticking to what makes the characters interesting. As strange as it may sound, The Dark Knight is a great movie that happens to be in the action genre, but which doesn't have well-done action scenes.

Regarding Interstellar, to call it "dumbed-down" was a bit harsh. But some major points are quite similar to 2001, and while Kubrick was able to convey almost everything with the power of images and music, and left much open to interpretation, Nolan has a tendency to make everything explicit with words.

Tarantino himself said that Nolan's Dunkirk is a masterpiece.
For me, that is another proof that Nolan is a genius.

Tarantino often publishes lists of recent favorite, so we know what he likes. If Noland did the same, maybe he would return the praise. By the way, Tarantino didn't include Inception in his Top 10 of the year list.

Anyway, the discussion is not about whether Nolan is a genius (he might be, depending on the interpretation of that word) but whether Nolan or Tarantino is the superior filmmaker. I've given my couple of cents.

You are right this discussion is ridiculous. The results is already known, Nolan is gonna win by a landslide and it is gonna be well-deserved.

1) The IMDb ratings have already spoken about that.

2) The Nolanites is one of the strongest fan group, it is way larger than Tarantino's.

3) Nolan wins almost all the time.

4) Nolan is gonna win
