Instead of a title, name or character name, you can enter the link (or the code / key) into the search for title, people, character and image lists instead of the name. For instance:

Titles (movies, TV shows, TV episodes)
If you enter "The Shawshank Redemption" (without the quotation marks) into the search box, you get multiple choices.
If you enter the link (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111161/) or the title key (tt0111161), you only get one choice, The Shawshank Redemption (1994).

People
If you enter "Morgan Freeman" (without the quotation marks) into the search box, you get multiple choices.
If you enter the link (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000151/) or the name (person) key (nm0000151), you only get one choice, Morgan Freeman.

Characters
If you enter "Ellis Boyd 'Red' Redding" (without the quotation marks) into the search box, you get multiple choices.
If you enter the link (http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0001387/) or the character key (ch0001387), you only get one choice, Ellis Boyd 'Red' Redding.

Images
Images have to be hosted on IMDb. Thumbnail images will not currently display on image lists. Only links to images (http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3172827136/ch0001387) or the image (media) key (rm3172827136) works for image lists.

This feature has been available since user created lists were made available on IMDb. Other IMDb users and I discovered this feature, but it has remained undocumented. This is not documented in Frequently Asked Questions about Lists or any place else on IMDb. It may be useful if IMDb formally documents this feature.

That feature is available for the general search as well. Entering the  constant in the Search box will take you directly to the correct page (for Names, Titles, Characters, and Companies - but not images).

It also works in most of the Update forms. However, there are a few (such as Name correction, I believe) where it won't. Certainly on all Cast or Crew credits if the constant is added to the Name or Title field the system will return the correct Name or Title on the next Check/Re-check.

And that, at least, is documented:

"Shortcuts:
If you know the IMDb constant identifier of an object in the database (e.g. tt0133093 is the IMDb id for the film The Matrix, and nm0000148 is the IMDb id for the actor Harrison Ford), you can just enter the id in the search box, and the search will take you straight to the relevant page."
