Wow, what an almost impossible choice, which makes for a great poll. Either Seven Samurai, Spirited Away, The Shoplifter, or the first Mayazaki film that I ever saw, My Neighbor Totoro.

FYC:
Tokyo Story

Oh, and welcome to the GS Poll Board. : )

This is a great list of great films; you may want to decide on inclusion criteria so that when people start to suggest other movies, the list is manageable. It also makes a list less arbitrary, as well as appear to not be arbitrary. An example of inclusion criteria would be "Filmed in Japan by a Japanese director, minimum IMDb rating of 7.5 and a Metacritic score, if the movie has one, of at least 75." That's just one example, of course.

I second that. Crazy suggestion: Since Japan's Tenno (or Emperor) Akihito abdicates today, maybe focus on movies that were made during his reign (1989-2019)? Just an idea.

I second to both. To make it more specific you can also make rules for suggestions to your idea. That can personalize your idea a little more. It can get the benefit of a unique position feature. albstein's idea is good. Other (additional) way of proceeding  could (but not necessarily have to) be (e.g.): excluding animes, excluding all other than animes, relating it to a special director, a special time-period, a company or the film format/-color. The more you specify, the more the potential suggestions of other user may shrink. But the more special the character of your poll gets. My experience about creating poll ideas is also to not bend too much. The list should always match with your poll-idea. :D

Can't find him on the database. Might the name be written otherwise?
Maybe the title of one of his movies would help.

Oh yeah! I've seen 'Die Reise nach Tokio' ('Tôkyô monogatari').
I think I should see more of him, maybe I something more he directed,
but then under German title. The database didn't detect him, because
the j above is missing. So it's good that you had the missing link. ;D

Breumaster: I'm glad that you found Ozu. He is one of my favorite directors of all time. Not for everyone, but he speaks to me.

BTW, tcm is now streaming three of his films, none of which I have seen before, but they will expire in a few days. My favorite Ozu films are Tokyo Story and Late Spring.  His sets are meticulously arranged, as if they are cinematic paintings, then he periodically takes the viewer out of the action, which often concern human/family relationships, and focuses on beautiful, serene scenes of nature or religious temples so that we can reflect for a moment on the human situations that have  transpired.  How do you say "magnificent" in Japanese?
