Someone at IMDb declined my contribution

#200318-043532-569000 , despite my submission correcting the title https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0019649// Arsenal (1928/1929) by Oleksandr Dovzhenko:

My corrections were for:
1) Running time
* Per the most authoritative body on Dovzhenko films, Dovzhenko Center, the film has 2 versions (they released in 2010 a 10-disks DVD set with the entire filmography of Oleksandr Dovzhenko; it can be downloaded from here https://toloka.to/t11079 (it was never released commercially so you can't buy it; you could only get it at special functions and events):
* original one from 1928 (62 min)
* recut version from 1972 (88 min)

IMDb running time rules state :
  • Point #1: We prefer to list one single running time for all titles which corresponds the default running time. This is the running time of the original release version in the country of origin and is indicated by an entry with a blank country field. However the running time of an entire series can be added once the series has completed, the complete running time should be submitted with the attribute (entire series).

  • Point #2: Please only submit running times for other countries or versions which differ from the default by at least 5% and when you know that specific cuts or changes have been made to the title. We find that differences of less than this are often timing errors or even rounding errors where local reviewers have rounded the true running time to the nearest 5 minutes. The assumption should be that, unless otherwise indicated, the running time for a title in any country is the same as the default running time. Also see the notes below on video timings before submitting any times taken from home video versions.

  • Point #3: Silent movies may be shown at slightly different speeds because at that time there was no exact standard of speed (running times for silent films were usually given in feet, but we won't go into such details here), so different people might get different times.
The 3 "running times" currently listed on IMDb do NOT follow the IMDb rules above on running times and shoult be replaced by the 2 running times listed above (62 min. from original 1928 version & 88 min from 1972 recut version):
1) Arengina: 75 min => incorrect time (see IMDb running time point #3), there's no proof from any source that in 1929 there was such significant "extension" of original version. This was the error described above when "different people might get different times" -> it should be removed.
2) Belgium: 90 min => incorrect time (see IMDb running time point #2), this version is just 2 min off from the 1972 version, no need to keep it -> it should be replaced with {default} 88 min (1972 recut version)
3) USA 70 min => incorrect time (see IMDb running time point #3), there's no proof from any source that in 1929 there was such significant "extension" of original version. This was the error described above when "different people might get different times" -> it should be removed.

1) Languages

As per the common practice on IMDb, for silent movies that don't have dialogues and communicate plot via intertitles, the following system is in place:
* in languages, for a movie with Englihs intertitles, the language of intertitles is selected with added comment (intertitles) or (English intertitles). See how this was done for American iconic slient movies with Charlie Chaplin:
=> The Circus (1928) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0018773/, The Pilgrim (1923) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0014358/ etc.

As is clearly seen from the DVD set with the entire filmography of Oleksandr Dovzhenko (can be downloaded from here https://toloka.to/t11079 ), both film's versions in 1928 and 1972 had Russian intertitles, so I've made 2 updates:
* removed "Ukrainian" (intertitles) as 2nd language listed
* updated from Russian (intertitles) to Russian (Russian intertitles) as 1st language

Please approve #200318-043532-569000

Thanks.

The film Taras Triasylo (1927) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt11885930/ needs to be updated:

Correct #1 his is a silent film with Ukrainian intertitles, so it should be corrected from the current Russian (slient) to Ukrainian (Ukrainian intertitles) . See a clip from the film yourself on production company's website https://vufku.org/found/taras-triasylo/ : https://vimeo.com/337288424

Correct #2 main title should be corrected from the current Russian-based spelling Taras Tryasilo (1927) to Ukrainian-based spelling Taras Triasylo (1927). See https://vufku.org/en/found/taras-triasylo-2/

I submitted these updates as two submissions that were rejected:

The film Tsyhanka Aza (1987) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0301956/ needs to be updated:

Correct #1 The film is originally shot in Ukrainian (with some dialogue in Romany and Polish, which is overvoiced into Ukrainian), so the languages should be corrected from the current Russian to Ukrainian as #1 listed language. See for yourself, the full film is available here  https://nextfilm.io.ua/v12fd191dd0a3a1ea926c8d61b6f4fa3a

Correct #2 main title should be corrected from the current Russian-based spelling Tsyganka Aza (1987) to Ukrainian-based spelling Tsyhanka Aza (1987).

I submitted these updates but they got rejected:

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Unable to fix 'original title' for tt10097664.

As usual, IMDb database stuff rejects correct submissions on the topic of Ukrainian movies for no apparent reason => #200322-025758-696000

When will IMBd hire a staff that will be responsible for Ukrainian movies so this doesn't keep happening on a massive scale? If you guys don't know any Ukrainian film professionals with good English knowledge - PM, I can help.

This time it's tt10097664 / Mamo, ya lyotchyka lyublyu https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10097664/ . It's a Ukrainian-language movie and thus the title should be based on the Ukrainian-langauge title MamO, ya lyotchYka lyublyu and not on the Russian-langauge title MamA, ya lyotchIka lyublyu.

Original Ukrainian-langauge title can be found in film credits (film can be viewed on divan.tv: https://divan.tv/uk/video/mamo-ya-lotchika-lyublyu-27384 ). Alternative film transliteration in English (e.g., Molodist IFF uses Ukrainian CMU version of UA->EN transliteration Mamo, ya liotchyka liubliu!, rather than American BGN version of UA-EN transliteration Mamo, ya lyotchyka lyublyu) can also be found on Molodist Kyiv International Film Festival website http://web.archive.org/web/20121027211908/http://www.molodist.com/program_catalogue/cat/382 (film participated in Molodist in 2012). Both CMU and BGN versions of transliteration are available at https://slovnyk.ua/translit.php (but one has to modify BGN version, since it uses apostrophes (') to transliteration Ukrainian word ь (that softens the previous letter), yet IMDb discourages the use of a apostrophes (') when transliterationg non-English title films with Cyryllic-based alphabet titles (IMDb, unfortuantely, doens't have a seperate 'Ukrainian names & titles' guide, however letter ь exists in both Ukrainian Cyrillic alphabet and Russian Cyrillic alphabet, so the IMDb' Russian names & titles' guidelines to NOT use anything for the Russian Cyrillic alphabet letter ь would equallly apply to Ukrainian Cyrillic alphabet letter ь)
