FX Stabbed Eyeball Ad Needs to be Removed, or Blockable

I'd like the ad removed but, failing that, is there a way to block offensive/grotesque ads on IMDB so kids (or sane people) can't see them? That horrendous FX ad of an eyeball being stabbed is popping up constantly, even when looking up perfectly innocuous things like old Shirley Temple films. It's disturbing enough to me, but I've been using this site since I was 12 so I'm guessing a lot of kids can be attacked by this garbage too.

I also find the FX ads for "The Strain" disturbing. I believe that IMDb should review it's editorial policy of what are acceptable ads and contact the advertiser when ads, such as this one, crosses the boundaries of good taste.

Part of the problem is that some  advertisements are are posted via ad servers from third parties.

There is a link at the bottom of the ad ad feedback. Clicking the link brings up a survey and comment form. I just completed the survey and express my issues with the ad. I encourage you and others offended by the ad to do likewise.

Please note: I am not an IMDb Employee. This is my opinion and may not represent the opinion of IMDb.

IMBD, take down that eyeball ad for FX! It is disgusting, violent, upsetting, and inappropriate. That's fine if some people want to use an ad blocker. But what about children and sensitive people who may not be computer-savvy? IMDB, please allow only non-violent images in your ads so we can all use the site.

Agreed. I've taken to filling out the feedback survey each time the ad appears. Since I've looked up a couple dozen movies this week, and the ad appears almost every time I do so, they've received numerous such commentaries from me. They shall continue to receive my protests each time it appears. Not sure what to do about the top and side banners on the front page though. No feedback buttons for that. Either way, I encourage everyone to continue protesting the ad as long as it remains on the site - and afterward as well if they don't own up to their mistake.

madpigmadpig,
What browser are you using? No matter the answer it should be possible to just install an addblocker of some form...eg for Chrome I use AdBlock and it blocks almost everything - so I cannot see the advert you describe, or indeed any advert....

It is worth looking into this at your end.

In thinking about it, as I mentioned to someone else, I could bemoan the fact that Safari (which is what I'm using) has no such ad-block features, but honestly IMDB shouldn't be posting this kind of material so prevalently in the first place. My view is that the principle of the thing (ensuring a safe and pleasant browsing experience for all) is equally as important as the fact that I personally am experiencing discomfort from the ad.

It is not as simple an ad as most, since it is impossible to remove or change by reloading the screens or switching pages and browsers. IMDb most approve these ads as the backdrop for their site for brief periods of time, and there needs to be a review process for what is allowed such a vibrant spot. The eyeball is horrific and disturbing, and this site is open to people of all ages to view. Even from someone who enjoys horror films, this is not the kind of thing you want popping up when all you are attempting to do is research an actor or director. Disgusting and in poor taste, please remove immediately.
(Not in any way am I affiliated with, or employed by, IMDb.)

Leandra,
You should def do the report as Dan says but could you do me a favour and post a link to a page where you see the advert.

For the record, I never suggested changing browsers.

For example, with a free app (AdBlock) installed, the front page of IMDb looks like this for me:

I would be curious to see what it looks like for others negatively affected by ads.

Joined the community forum JUST for this reason. It's SO disgusting and it should be optional. Here's a pic of what it looks for these who can't see it.

Ouch! Yeah that's bad.  I have Firefox browser with ad block plus and it usually eliminates all the ads.  I don't see the ad part, but it's one of the three highlighted titles so I see the one panel (and that's bad enough).

It's Sunday and staff participation will be light...but maybe they'll get this thread and work on it tomorrow!

I had considered posting the image, but I found it so nauseating that I could not bring myself to post it.

The debut of "The Strain" is tonight. We can hope that the ad campaign may be over by tomorrow. If this ad campaign continues beyond today, let's hope that IMDb's contract with FX allows IMDb staff to withdraw this ad from the home page and other pages that children may visit.

I'm repulsed enough that FX has assurance I will not be a customer of their services ever again.

@bluesmanSF,

A web page will never replace good first aid training and a first aid book in an emergency. The repulsive ad reminded me of my boyscout first aid training for removing fishhooks that I received well over forty years ago. If I recall correctly, the boyscout manual stated that a fishhook near the eye required immediate emergency room treatment, that the affected eye should be covered by metal eye patch and/or cotton gauze, and that no attempts should be made to remove the fishhook.

@Monica,

Please forgive the occasional silliness and flights of fancy. The silliness is a defense against encountering strange problems like the one you and others reported.

@ Dan...yeah, that advice sounds right! Fish hook in the finger is a little different...push it the rest of the way through and back out of the skin and cut off the end.  We did that to my uncle and didn't have an antiseptic...gave him a glass of bourbon and he drank it, pushed it through, himself and cut it off...good to go!

@ Monica...sorry.  How about I never post here again and you take over for me...when you get to 3,000 helpful replies like I have, I'll take back over...

Oh...didn't know it's only you that gets to do that.  Good to know. Or was your demand for me to get out of here non-inflammatory?

Wish they'd implement an ignore list for this board.  Jeez...<shrugs>

I've been using IMDB for many many years and I actually just made an account specifically to protest this ad. The imagery is repulsive and makes me gag. Please remove this disgusting advertisement.

Since IMDB.com doesn't really have much available here to report this sort of thing (previously stated 'report ad' link does not exist for me) I had a chat with an Amazon.com customer service rep mere moments ago (https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/contact-us/181-5074927-8543114?ie=UTF8&language=en_US&am...)
I feel like contacting them might be more effective at getting the point across, seeing as they are affiliated. If you do contact them, I would ask you to understand that the service reps are quite limited but very kind and will do what they can to help. With that in mind, please be courteous interacting with them.
Shout out to Iris for the help.

this board, especially this "problem" category is for reporting problems (specifically on IMDb.com).  I cannot see how going to another site (even if they have the same owner) is going to do anything more.  there is about 30 staff members who follow this board, including the CEO of IMDb. I doubt Iris has more clout than anyone of the staffers here.

anyway, I'm a plus 1, it's a tad inappropriate.

I just saw an older post, talking about the same issue from TWO MONTHS ago, so the reaction from imdb is obviously that they don't care. I used AD Block on chrome and that seemed to do the trick. I couldn't bear to look at it any more, made me sick to my stomach.

Does that poster have to be on the front page?.

I think the hook-in-eyeball poster for The Strain currently being displayed on the front page, in addition to being borderline NSFW, is completely disgusting and not at all appropriate for the home page of a reputable website. Is there any chance it can be swapped out?

Last night I tried to look up a movie on IMDB, and the eyeball thing was HORRIBLE!  I can't believe they would post that!  That's the kind of thing I can't stand and gives me nightmares, so needless to say last night was not a fun night for me!  And then trying to find a "contact us" page only lead to the same image!  I am very disappointed in them!  This is truly a disturbing image that should not be on their page!  All I wanted to look up was an Audrey Hepburn movie.  Instead I spend the night with nightmares about eyeballs!  Gee, thanks IMDB.

Thank you for responding. Although I am glad of your assurance that IMDB will more carefully consider their ad choices in the future, I am greatly disappointed and disgusted that they still waited until the designated end of the promotion to remove the ad in question.
