General questions on "uncredited actors" credits

There are many uncredited actors named in older films. How were they discovered? Were they found in Movie Studio records or users identified or both? I have noticed some actors listed as uncredited and searched the movie for he/she and can't find anywhere. I believe that either he/she ended up on the cutting room floor, was mistaken identified by a well-meaning user (Kurt Kasznar in The Bad and the Beautiful) and/or maybe given credit, particularly during the Depression, by the studio as a charity case. Does anybody know the answers?

Specifically, for older projects, if a performer is listed as uncredited on a title, a viewer has seen the film and provided a still or video from the film with that person's appearance.

Also, any documents from the production would be another way to prove an appearance in a project. Obviously, when a project was produced and released to the public, it may not be possible to locate that information.

I hope this helps. Please write back if you have any more questions.

Adding to GMJ's helpful response there are specific resources that are dedicated to identifying some of the uncredited actors (among other objectives), Aveleyman being one of them.

Many film scholars also spend weeks and months researching film archives and going frame-by-frame trying to identify some of the actors for their books. I am pretty sure some contribute their evidence to IMDb these days, as well. I do when I reearch things like that on a hobby level.
