Grouping direct to video series

There does not seem to be a consistent way to list a series that has been released direct to video one at a time. Some (like "What's in the Bible?") have individual pages for each title with no connection to the others in the series.  Others are listed as a TV series with each video as an episode.  Perhaps a new title type of "video series" that functions like a TV series would be a good solution for these cases.

Perhaps this (my old thread) could help, at least it’s a bit related:

Yes, it looks like we are both suggesting the same thing for different reasons.  With web series now being common, the need for actually broadcasting on TV seems less and less relevant. We just need a logical way to group shows like these.

IMDb generally seems to handle these as TV series. I worked quite a bit on the Simon's Cat series to get them correct. (See here: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2057193/episodes?season=1) Basically, IMDb has these as one continuous season with different episodes. You can actually merge the separate titles into the TV series that exists.

I'm not sure that it really needs a different category. After, TV series already encompasses things that aren't actually shown on TV, like Netflix/Amazon/Hulu originals.

Well, it depends what kind of videos you are talking about. Eboy's topic shows that items released separately on VHS/DVD should be separate titles.

The examples and guidance seems to vary. I prefer the idea of just treating them as episodic TV shows since they are episodic.

The title can’t be a ”TV series” if it wasn’t released on TV first (and as a ”series”). To me it’s pretty clear what the ”TV series” is. The problem arises when something is released on VIDEO first.

That's the case I've seen with several of these shows. They are released episode by episode to DVD as funding allows. Then, once they have enough to be a full season, they are picked up by a network and "re"-aired.  I know of at least one show that was done this way for the first "season" and then it went the other direction (TV first) for the second season. Each episode has been released on DVD as a separate item for both seasons.

It sounds like in that case you have to follow the IMDb rules from the earlier thread (created by me). Meaning, that each DVD should be added as an individual ”video” title to IMDb. As I see it, the title is ”V” if it was released on ”video” first (VHS, Laserdisc, DVD, Blu-ray...) - even when it would be easier to add it as a ”TV series”.

Yes, that seems to be guidance I've seen frequently.  I would just like to see a way to better group these for organization.

Another problem that arises when listing these individually is how it clutters the filmography pages of the people involved in those projects. If there are 30 separate episodes in a video-first series, then the actors have 30 separate projects listed whereas a TV show that aired on prime time and might be better known will just be listed as a single project with the episodes under that one listing.

Hi, I am looking for help concerning a related problem: I want to contribute to a web-based series of stand alone videos, which where shown online and cinemas as well so far. How can I submit this? It ́s not a TV-series, but a series of short films under one head title, and then episodes (short films) directed by different directors. How can I submit this as an ongoing project, shot between 2017 - ongoing?
Thx for help, from Berlin, best wishes
