... to include guidance regarding sneak previews and focus groups.
I believe that studios primarily show rough cuts to sneak previews and focus groups to assess audience reaction to make final edits to films. As such, they should not be considered release dates.

Thanks Will, but can you also add Sneak Previews to the exception rule? After all, (most) sneak previews are shown to the public after the final edits have been made.
Also, at the top of the page, can you create a link to the exceptions? Now it seems like the information about how to add or update a release date is the last information given on this page.

If the preview is a public screening of the full film, it can probably be listed.

The sneak preview case is an interesting one, it is entirely dependent on the type of preview screening and the specific example in hand. As such this was purposefully omitted from the guide update to prevent any ambiguity in the guide.

I understand your reasoning Will, but on the other hand, because sneak previews aren't mentioned in the guide, I wouldn't know what to do with them if all I've got is the guide.

One thing I am concerned about, however, is that some filmmakers will misinterpret this policy to try to manipulate the year in parentheses after the title of their films.

Contributor #1: "You mean the screening that was held at a film festival?"
Contributor #2: "According to the festival web site, they charged $15 a ticket for admission to your film."
Contributor #3: "Also, your film wound up winning the festival award for Best Actress."
Filmmaker: "So what? It was still just a test screening for a focus group! It shouldn't count as a release date! Anyway, that release date makes my film look old! You have no right to damage my film's business potential by making it look outdated!"

Thanks for your concern. We are aware of this, we will not be making changes based on just this argument. The case above illustrates an example where we wouldn't change or remove a release date.

I also note the 'Eligibility' rules still state:
For a work to be eligible for inclusion in the database it must be of general public interest and should be available to the public
Not: we accept any YouTube rubbish, if you make it we will take it.
Half of the stuff on here is junk crappy home made stuff and not of public interest and not available.
