Hello,

Every october on the Horror board there's and unofficial "challenge" where posters try to watch 31 horror films during the month and post their progress on the board

Would it be possible for a mod to create a thread for people to post their progress on?

It's something in the past we've managed ourselves but it seems impossible now because there seems to be a couple of people that enjoy reporting innocent posts - IMDb user seth_yeah created a post for this purpose and it was deleted after about 30 minutes

I previous years (2013 I think) you re-instated the progress thread when it was deleted mid month

Many thanks

Dave

Hi David Harding,

I remember the problems the Horror message board had during October 2014.

The Horror message board is the logical place to have a discussion about seeing 31 horror films in October 2015.

May I humbly offer a possible alternative. Post a poll suggestion on the IMDb Poll message board along the lines of "Poll Suggestion: 31 Days of Horror in October" towards the end of September and have a discussion in constructing this poll on which films would be logical films to include in this poll.

If this idea is appealing, please read learn how to create polls on IMDb and send me a PM if you need help in formulating a poll suggestion.

So long as the people participating in the thread discussing the poll suggestion remain respectful and stay on topic, this could be an interesting experiment. They could also discuss their progress in watching 31 horror films so long as they also suggest films at the same time.

Likewise, if other IMDb users think this is a very bad idea, please say so in this thread while remaining respectful.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for the suggestion. It does seems like viable work around although it shouldn't be necessary to create a poll to stop a thread being deleted - I guess we can only deal with what's in front of us and it's certainly a creative solution.

Thanks again - and as for the problems back in 2014 I'm 99% sure it's the same person - impossible to tell for certain with different user names etc but the MO is the same - I guess some people just have too much time on their hands

Regards

Dave

I think what the staff mostly needs to do about this is to carefully scrutinize people's requests to delete threads. If people make requests to delete threads that are on topic and not in violation of any policy, not only should the staff deny those requests, they should consider ignoring future requests from those people. In no case should a thread be deleted by an automated process without any human intervention by a staffer.

I believe the system is entirely automated - I guess the boards are so big it's hard to manage.

What would be a good is if serial reporters could be looked at before they are acted on

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled IMDB Horror Board Challenge thread deleted.

Trolls are once again reporting the October Challenge thread until auto-admin deletes it. This occurred last year or year before last and IMDB admin was able to retrieve the thread and prevent it from being deleted.
Can this happen again please?

thanks

Hello
Many thanks for retrieving the thread at the url I posted earlier.
The link for the thread below is for the actual progress thread we use for the challenge. It appears to be almost intact except for the first few posts

I also noticed that the original post in the thread has been deleted. This is something that participants in this Horror message board game can use to their advantage. It is still possible to post to the thread, but is less likely to attract the attention of those who would report the thread.

I recommend that you send a PM to trusted contributors of the horror board with the link you provided.

If you continue to have a problem with trolls that do not believe in the celebration of Halloween, you may wish to consider the offer I made to David Harding.

Have a great October and Halloween in 2015.

Best of luck.

Yes, we have been using the  "delete the first post" trick for a little while now... it doesn't always work, but can discourage the troll behavior.

Thanks again for looking into this.
